I have very little doubt that he's in no way diminished physically. The major problems were psychological. The guy's 24. 24! His prime is ahead of him. He will come back into greatness after a poor season. Class is permanent.
There are plenty of players who were great initially and then went downhill. Hopefully Phil will sort his head out and not join that group.

So if teams start singing nasty songs at him he’ll fall to bits? Christ! Best not pick him for old trafford or Anfield next season then.
so any footballer, who has a dad , who works for the council, and fans start singing, "my old mans a dustman. is more than likely to be utter shite. ?

Sometimes people forget these players spend about 18-20hrs a day away from their football, and that time can greatly affect what goes on in their footballing life.

Phil would not be the first bright star to quickly fade, so I hope he is able to sort out whatever off field issues he has.

Success came very quickly and all at once for such a young lad whose personal circumstances also changed dramatically over that very short period.

Here’s wishing him and his family the best.

Been thinking about this today. Phil announces he has been struggling mentally off the pitch. Fine, not a problem and it’s been clear for most of the season that he wasn’t switched on.
This is where I’ve got a problem, not with Phil, but with us, the fans. You see, since he confessed he has made a couple of substitute appearances and has come on to polite ripples of applause at best. This is poor. We should be singing his name from the rafters to let him know we love him and we are fully behind him. Imagine the lift he would have got if we welcomed him back to the same extent as we welcomed Rodders back into the pitch? That’s it. I think we’ve missed an opportunity there and let ourselves down.

Michael Johnson - Cracking young talent who ultimately struggled to cope with the pressures of being a high-profile professional athlete.

Hopefully, Phil can get the help and support he needs to be able to get back to his best, but it's ultimately about him being fit and well in himself, and the football is secondary to that.

Hopefully but he’s definitely struggled physically all season

Not like he is living in a council house though is it? He can afford nannies, chauffeurs etc. to take the pressure off.
The stress of being a high profile player must be draining. I would not want to live under that microscope.

Not even for £250k a week or whatever he is on. I’m sure I could have a try at that !

Bellingham, Saka and I think Rice were all blamed for ruining his performance at the Euros. It's s been almost a year now, I think its time we move on from that excuse.

I think the first time he saw Ben Whites face with England he has had recurring nightmares. Real scary attack of the oompa loompas.

Even though I’m biased and absolutely love the lad, I can admit he’s been below par this season (not entirely his own fault).

But can you imagine the public outcry if he’d put in the performance of Palmer and Bellingham just have against fucking Andorra?!

Absolutely no doubt that he’s held to a totally different standard to everyone else. Fucking Carragher would be calling for him to never play again if he put in the performance of the other 2 tonight.

With the acquisition of Cherki, I would seriously consider leaving Foden out of the CWC squad, for him to rest and heal his ongoing injury, and be in a better place to start the season.
Could be right mate

I've seen this thought, I just don't believe it is the best way forward.
Phil needs to be with his team right now more then ever.
He is currently in the worst form of his outstanding career.

Leaving him to stew in it, while the rest of the boys are playing 1,000 miles away will only be isolating for him in my opinion.
He doesn't need to play a lot in the states, but just the practice sessions and team bonding activities alone will be great to build back up his confidence.

It seems obvious the lad is very down right now, I just personally don't feel like isolation away from the team is the right move to combat that.

Very sensible post, leaving him here won't help, there'll be some new rivers to fish too.
