Irish Current Affairs

Mix with the wrong people - wear kecks that give you a strangulated testicle and take a lifetime of punches to the head and you too can be a total bellend

He is done over here. He will try to get some headlines and stir it up where he can.
Hard to support someone so recently done for rape, like what country would elect a rapist as their president?
Can see him landing in the states at some point and doing the right wing circuit.

You’d wonder where the glut of American interviews on Dublin streets YouTube clips have been funded.
I’ve seen a few and none of the so called majority opinion matches anything I’ve encountered.
People generally think the guy is a crackhead gobshite.

But it’s a little worrying the infiltration into an Irish Presidential election that America doesn’t even understand.
It’s a purely ceremonial position and should be occupied with someone dignified and knowledgeable about our own constitution.

You can’t help feel there is external meddling going on here, like there is in the rest of Europe.

It's a little disconcerting but I have the same experience as you. I know 1 racist **** and he's been like that for over 30 yrs.
We've been very lucky with our last few Presidents, don't always agree with them but they have shown the dignity the office requires.

A shooting in Carlow today. Far right already trying to make it about immigration with no semi-legitimate information about the man available, as per.

Was going passed there a couple hours before, only posting mirror because they have descriptions of attacker/victim and others don't
There's parts of the centre of Dublin that can best be described as shitholes. I wouldn't like to walk through them at night time. But then, you can say that any large city, I guess.

North of the Liffey, inner city has gone to shit. I walk it early morning and afternoon around 4pm generally.
The homelessness alone is shocking.
They’re ghetto-ising the place. Hardly hear any English spoken and when you do it’s usually from a Dublin Honda 50 crackhead.

Nnnnyyyeahhhhh! Story bud?

I'll bow to your greater knowledge.

I have visited several times in the last few years.
I have a friend there called Rose McNally. We have never actually met face to face but we have a familial connection due to the Coombe.
She's in in her mid 70s now and I wanted to meet up with her last time I was over, but she said she didn't want to venture north of the Liffey because of how bad it has got.

Yeah. And The Coombe would be South inner city. Well it would be regarded as a traditional old Dublin inner city area in regards to being between the Liffey and the Grand Canal, or South Circular Road, which I suppose you could use as a border for the City Centre.

It’s an old Corporation area with all same problems as any other corporation area, but on the north side of the Liffey using the Royal Canal and North Circular Road as the border things just seem totally foreign to the Dublin I frequented during my 20’s.

Particularly the inner city including O’Connell Street and The Quays. Places that should be major tourist thoroughfares.

I’m loathe to run the place down but can’t in all conscience recommend the place to innocent tourists.
There are plenty of great places to eat and drink still, in the city, but apart from Temple Bar which is over priced I would recommend south of the river in general just for safety.

Sad I know. But when your in a city you don’t know you want to feel comfortable.

I myself am a Northsider. There are great bars here in areas out of town. Local knowledge is a great thing.

If you’re meeting your friend, go with her local knowledge. You’ll have a great time.

Yes, last time I was there we stayed in a hotel just off O'Connell Street. It was lovely (and much cheaper than The Gresham where I stayed each time the 2 visits in 2021 and 2023. But that's what you pay for a bit of history I guess).

I never felt "uncomfortable" around there (I'm a Manchester girl after all, lol) but I was aware of the difference since a visit in 2010. I think you can say that about most cities though.

Anyway, I'm doing the West Coast in August. Never been before. Staying in Killarney. Can't wait.

And Rose promised me an apple tart pie when I'm next on the South side of Dublin, and gave me her address. I'll visit her one day :-)

It wasn’t a good idea for the government to house migrants in the main hotel in Newport Mayo, they have all been moved on I don’t know where to ? Possibly back to Dublin as the town was losing to much money from tourists not visiting. There is no where for tourists to stay if the hotel has migrants in it.

Well with the government, good ideas are very few and very far between.

They tell us the 1 million PPSN numbers given out in the past ~6 years, plus the other migrants, have no effect on the housing crisis and the migrants have no effect on hotel pricing and tourism :) not that it was ever particularly cheap in the cities

2 Romanian teenage boys in court charged with sexual assault on teenage girl in Ballymena. Apparently been few attacks recently. Locals decided to riot last night attacking houses thought to house not only foreign nationals but local people. One family hid in the loft. If someone had set fire to that house they'd have almost certainly been killed. 15 police officers hurt. Not sure what the answer is but it certainly isn't rioting. One image shows a speed boat up on footpath near a house. Guy must have one that on bullseye as no water in Ballymena.

It's a tale as old as time, when the people feel the leaders representing them are not listening or going against their interests, riots happen. The same thing happened in Dublin when a foreigner stabbed multiple school children. Sure you can see it in LA right now, ironically for the opposite reason! (Not condoning it just that seems to be the reasoning)

I hope something changes, we've had similar rape cases down South and it feels like it could kick off any moment in a similar way, seems to be no control and government are dismissive and doing very strange things that's only stoking the fire (such as recruiting garda from refugee centres), we don't have access to the EU database on migrants so we can't even vet them by their own admission.

I don't know, it's worrying, people have every right to be angry but you really don't like to see this. Like you said, innocents could have easily been hurt. I wish I could offer an idea or solution but really no idea.

Adding that the Romanians in Ballymena are posting threats now on Facebook, so this might not be the last we hear of this..
