Been thinking about this today. Phil announces he has been struggling mentally off the pitch. Fine, not a problem and it’s been clear for most of the season that he wasn’t switched on.
This is where I’ve got a problem, not with Phil, but with us, the fans. You see, since he confessed he has made a couple of substitute appearances and has come on to polite ripples of applause at best. This is poor. We should be singing his name from the rafters to let him know we love him and we are fully behind him. Imagine the lift he would have got if we welcomed him back to the same extent as we welcomed Rodders back into the pitch? That’s it. I think we’ve missed an opportunity there and let ourselves down.
I really think, collectively, City fans don't appreciate Foden enough. A blue when we were sh*t, clearly loves the club, came through the academy, won the lot, scored huge goals at home and in Europe, and clear domestic player of the year merely 12 months ago.

No real songs about him - Oscar Bobb has one??!
No noticeable extra support during tough time - Grealish even got a chant when he came on v Wolves!

Really odd.

I've seen this thought, I just don't believe it is the best way forward.
Phil needs to be with his team right now more then ever.
He is currently in the worst form of his outstanding career.

Leaving him to stew in it, while the rest of the boys are playing 1,000 miles away will only be isolating for him in my opinion.
He doesn't need to play a lot in the states, but just the practice sessions and team bonding activities alone will be great to build back up his confidence.

It seems obvious the lad is very down right now, I just personally don't feel like isolation away from the team is the right move to combat that.
I was all for letting him rest this summer, but i agree with this and now think it will be best if he's with the rest of the squad.

I agree with you. To be brutally honest, even though I'd prefer to see him resting for a few weeks, I think that Phil needs to play in the CWC now that Cherki has arrived, to avoid being pushed 'out of the limelight' and risk slipping down the pecking order.

I agree. How on earth does he not have a chant!

We still sing "Benjani, woooah" now and again after his one goal against united 17 years ago! Foden has 6 against that mob, including a hat trick! Plus 2 goals that literally won us the title last year.

I will say, the Boss 'Dancing in the Dark' chant got going a bit towards the end of 23/24 season, but once England fans started singing it too we seemed to lose interest.

The situation needs sorting ASAP!

To me, it felt like not playing for England was the rest he was talking about. He hasn't played a game in over 2 weeks, and with the CWC first game, it will be around 3.5 weeks, surely that's long enough rest by then? I also think the first few games are basically warm up games lol.

After the CWC (depending on when we get put out), he will get another rest as well.

Equally so, if he is let off the CWC as well for rest, sure, I'm fine with that too.

But I don't think he needs or wants THAT much time off.

With all the talk of new signings...if we can get Foden back to being the player he was the season before last, he's arguably better than the new lads.

He's brilliant but lost his way for some reason. He'll be back though.

How much rest does he need? He hasn’t played for 2 weeks + and barely played in the end of the season. The CWC is coming at the right moment

Depends on his ankle injury. If he needs more rest, this is the ideal time to do it.

Mental rest? Can be very important, you know.
If that was the case he would get the whole CWC off so it can’t be that hard. He had a bad season with some problems - yeah okay but if it was an emergency like case he wouldn’t be there.

I think his issues have been somewhat exaggerated by our fans, maybe that's not the right way to put it...

But a lot of people have talked about injuries and illnesses, yet he's been in the match day squad most of the time and featured. He played in 45 games in total, so clearly it's not that.

There's talk about his mental health, that could certainly be an issue, you never truly now with anyone but also clubs these days monitor their players extremely closely too. You'd imagine that club would know if there's any real major issue and be addressing it, rather than have him in the team or on the bench.

It seems to me he wasn't playing that well, just low on confidence and couldn't really get any momentum going, much like a lot of the team really. We had to grind out 3rd place, so it's not like the rest of the team were on fire, it's just he went from the best in the league to basically being anonymous in the space of months. He did seem to pick up his form at the turn of the year but dropped off again.

With some fresh players around the team, hopefully we start playing better and then I'm sure Phil will be back too. You don't lose that ability at his age.

The whole CWC off would be good in an ideal world. On the other hand, Phil’s facing massive competition for a starting place next season, after a disappointing year, and won’t want to be out of the spotlight when the starting pistol is fired.

We don’t really know his physical and psychological state and will have to leave these decisions to the professionals.
