Band name

What Noel and Liam's dad might have called them for a while, but maybe not now they are doing a series of concerts together.
Turns out Greedy Bastards had no such album, so I was nearly back to the drawing board before...

Has Hear the Rivers by Greenleaf made it into the European places? You betchya :)

Pulling in a disappointingly low 10 votes, but on the upside 6 of us gave it an 8, including the usually frugal BimboBob (average score 4.90) and bennyboy (5.08). The final average is 7.30, which is good enough for 17th place in the overall table.

This week it's the turn of Grandad @GornikDaze, so called because he's busy being a grandad, so I'll post these clues before I disappear into a meeting.
Hmmm. 6 of you are awfully generous. But to each their own. I also find QOTSA rather dull so maybe that's the disconnect. Anyhow, onto the next!

@Coatigan is correct. Here's what @GornikDaze has to say about the album:-

So I was planning to nominate this band/album for my last pick, but went off at a tangent.

I mentioned in my review of Greenleaf, that there was a singer I had in mind on The Rivers Lullaby, so I’ll let you pass judgment on that one.

Rival Sons were one of my lockdown highlights (giving up alcohol was another one). I don’t miss drinking, but I think I’d struggle not to hear some decent music!

I’ve gone right back to the beginning for my pick, although Great Western Valkyrie ran it close. Before The Fire is a bit on the raw side and certainly less polished, but it’s still a banger. Jay Buchanan is one of my favourite current vocalists and front men. Yes he’s a little over the top at times (what rock singer isn’t), but he has an amazingly powerful voice. Add that with my other prerequisite of great guitar and IMHO it’s a winning combination.

These guys are just brilliant live, and they still play relatively small venues (to their credit), a great night out if you get the opportunity.

@GornikDaze had you chosen Feral Roots I'd have had the perfect song to segue into my next pick, bloody inconsiderate ;-) Which of their albums apart from this one are your favourites ? The vibe is quite different on some of them?

When Gornik told me what he was nominating he said that Great Western Valkyrie had just missed out. I pointed out the two Rival Sons albums I had were that one and Feral Roots, both very good albums.

I think that Great Western Valkyrie might have gone down well on here with it's mix of rock and soul.

As Rob said, Great Western Valkyrie is excellent, as is Feral Roots. Having not been into them in the early days, I’ve enjoyed going back through their catalogue. As a debut album I think it’s pretty decent.

I really like Darkfighter, which is, pretty dark! I just didn’t feel that would suit most on here particularly if it’s a new band for some. I feel I may be preaching to the converted though, so which albums do you enjoy?

Personally I'd add Pressure & Time to both Feral Roots and GWV, I like them most when they groove a bit. That said I'm not sure I've heard a really duff album by them. In theory Darkfighter should really be less my cup of tea but I like it too; I get what they were trying to do with Lightbringer but it skirts close to twee at times. Not actually listened to their one from last year so this is a good prompt to give that a go.

Enjoy your last week - if enjoy is the word!

Note to self: Nominate Radiohead this week to fly under Foggy's radar! ;)
Missing our match today as it's my last day. Missing our match Sunday as it's my retirement dinner. But will be in my pub Thursday lunch for the Juve match.

And I might never leave :).

How dare you, I gave it a 7!

Rival Sons: Before the Fire.

IIRC, this came free with Classic Rock magazine. Whatever, I didn't pay for it.

It's right up my alley- rootsy and bluesy hard rock. It swings. You can dance to it. And when they slow it down, Jay Buchannan's folk roots shine. The guy can sing.

Yeah, yeah... we know, the Zep influences are clear but I couldn't give a flying proverbial.

Saw them at a half full Academy 3, soon after, and was blown away. Tighter than a gnat's chuff. Proper players. Seen them a couple of time since but that night was special (and I've been going to gigs since 78.)

Great songs, well produced and the engineering is excellent. Their best IMO.

Greta van who? Lol.

Great choice, great thread.

You sound like it might be worth giving last week's album, if you have the time, a go. Another freebie.

I'd not heard of these before and had no idea what to expect. For some reason I thought they'd be a indie-type band making the type of music I'd heard before - that's just based on the name though! :)

I thought Darkfighter was a great opening track and really caught me by surprise. Was it folk? Rock? Blues? Who knows but it was a great track and I was really looking forward to the rest of the album. It didn't disappoint.

Mercy had a great riff and moved the album square into a 'yes, this is rock' territory, Redemption tempered that with a softer tone though, but then Sweet Life had a 60's vibe to it and Before the Fire sounded a bit mid-90s rock/indie before a Radioheady Mosaic.

By rights, the changes in style shouldn't really work but it does. This is a very good album and one I'll be listening to again tomorrow.

Goat, I hate to say this but I think you're listening to the wrong album! Possibly I'm culpable as I mentioned Lightbringer to Gornik. We're on the much earlier Before The Fire.

Sorry if it's me that caused the confusion.
