We win and Madrid win and we will face Salzburg in the R16, Dortmund or River Plate in the quarter and Botafogo/ Palmeiras, Chelsea or Benfica in the semi final.

We win here and Madrid win we have a decent run to the final.
Dont win and we have a helluva job to get to the final.

Chelsea are so lucky

But are Chelsea good enough to dispose of Benfica and Botafogo?

Anyway, we gotta win this and we are guaranteed an easy run to the final. Toughest possible opponent could be Inter Milan in the quarters.

Did you see their useless display in tbe CL final? An ageing team that’s come to its life end, like us they need a refresh (hopefully we’ve now done our bit).

Yes, they were utterly disgraceful in that final (on that night), but that doesn’t represent their level. They were chasing a historic treble, and the way they bottled the league probably hurt them too much and screwed up their final. Other than that, their Champions League run was impressive (they defeated Arsenal, Bayern, and Barça).

But I agree they are aging and have just lost their manager, replacing him with a novice. They certainly can’t win the Club World Cup. Still, they’re the toughest possible opponent compared to the other alternatives in this part of the bracket (Dortmund and River). I just meant we need to beat Juve, so we should take this relatively easy route to the final. Inter being the strongest in this half just underlines how easy it should be compared to the other route (Real + Bayern or PSG).

Remember in the mid 70s both ourselves and the rags played Juve in consecutive rounds of the UEFA cup. They knocked the rags out and kicked them to death the press were outraged. The next round they kicked shit out of us and knocked us out the press didn't say a dicky bird. The more things change the more they stay the same.
Think you've got the order the wrong way round.

I was at our game and remember nothing about kicking the shit out of us being mentioned but as you say that changed when they played the rags.

Given that it makes a lot of sense to win that game, Pep will field the best possible team.

What is that team is anyone's guess, but IMO, we will try to avoid risks and be solid, hoping that if we need goals we have enough options on the bench to help us score. Cherki's impressive cameos recently will probably mean that he starts on the bench. His starts for France and City have been less impressive than his cameos as an impactfull sub.

If we win, we are playing Al Hilal or RB Salzburg at 2am on a weekday - not ideal.
However if we lose or draw it’s Real Madrid at 8pm. I personally wouldn’t mind that. It really shows us where we are as a squad.
It's true the 8pm fixtures might be easier for the UK fans to watch live, but it's 3pm locally, therefore hotter for the players.

Whereas a 2am fixture, although difficult to watch in the UK live, is 9pm locally, usually much cooler conditions for the players!

It was on Channel 5 Action, 130 on my Virgin device.
I recorded the 2am Al Ain game from Channel 5 to a hard drive but on 'extended play' not 'short play'. Unfortunately the pictures are not sufficiently high quality for me to fully enjoy. (Next time I will record on short play!).

I am hoping the City+ coverage of the whole match available today will be much more enjoyable.

another reason for me for winning the group is apart from avoiding psg, real, bayern etc

the top half of the draw now has benfica, pretty sure(someone can correct me) its the last "big" european team we havent played yet and i've always wanted to play them in a competitive game

I think it's been 7pm GMT (8PM UK time) and 1am GMT(2am UK time)...

Personally, I really don’t mind a couple of hard games. We need to know where this team is at going into the season. We know where Liverpool are and now they have Wirtz. We need to know can we seriously challenge them, Madrid for me would be a great test.
