The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

Why does outlandish and unlistenable have to be the same thing.

If blues (the popular half of any genre that interweaves it on here) as an example had never existed before and you suddenly found an album with it, would you find it unlistenable? Outlandish, maybe, but unlistenable?
But Blues has been done. As has rock n roll. As has hard rock etc. etc.

There are lots of groundbreaking new styles that, for the most part, I don't enjoy (rap, drum n bass, hip hop etc.).

What original music style will appear that I will enjoy from this point? In truth, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that the answer will be none. Whatever it is will be a derivative of rock/pop/blues/country folk/jazz, which is why I say I don't like on-the-nose blues or on-the-nose-country - it has to be some fractional divergence from those existing styles.

As BlueHammer put it:-

it is tough to sound original now days for any rock band as everything's been and done before

That in no way really touches on the question I was asking.

Ultimately, I disagree with a somewhat crass sweeping statement that anything 'original' or 'new' or even 'unique' must by default also be 'unlistenable'.

Perhaps the styles you describe were considered unlistenable when they emerged (morphed), but they are easy enough to love, and I don't see why nothing else should ever have that benefit ever again.

Gave Great Western Valkyrie a go as well, while this week still has life in it, on the say so of gornik and rob. Obviously just the one listen so unfair to try compare it to the album at hand which I spent more time on, but enough there to stick on a revisit list.

RIVAL SONS. BEFORE THE FIRE

I’ve not listened to much of the RS before as always thought of them as LZ sound alikes, although I’ve always enjoyed the odd track nominated on other threads. That said despite the obvious. I enjoyed this album it’s good driving rock .As it’s their debut and they were young maybe they can be forgiven any plagiarism. They sound a tight band with a good guitarist and most importantly a great singer similar to my favourite rock bands Free and Bad Company.

One of my mates is a big fan and has seen them live many times but I’ve never been inclined to go so maybe I’ve missed out.I ‘m certainly going to investigate other albums namely ‘Feral Roots’ and ‘Great Western Valkyrie’ as i think they’ll appeal to me more than this one.

Foot note , there’s a firm of Plumbers that lived near me who were obviously fans as they named themselves ‘Urinal Sons’ and the side of their van had US in the RS style logo.

A good pick Gornick, which I was going to give 6.5/10 as I got similar enjoyment from the previous weeks album but I’m notching up to 7/10 as Jay Buchanan has got a great voice that reminds me just as much as Paul Rodger’s as well as obviously Robert Plants.

With all these jobs you have had around the world, would it not simply be easier to admit that you work for "Universal Exports"

Lol. If even the tiniest aspect of our national security rested on my shoulders then we're all truly f***d.

Tweaking my write up to reference this as we speak!

Edit: you should probably be given a 30 minute handicap on the clue guessing.
I thought of invoking the same when my turn comes, but that duration may still not be enough...

I've been LBJ skimming over some good clues thus far, huh?

Before the Fire by Rival Sons was a good, solid nomination by @GornikDaze that is backed up by the 15 votes at an average of 6.60.

Next up is the man of 1000 jobs, @threespires

Thanks Rob, hope your afternoon goes well/painlessly. My last lot of clues resulted in the pitchforks coming out, let's see if I can do better this time.

Band name

Or have you gone for a new genre of music...Wizard Rock
Harry & The Potters

No to the above - not sure how we get Wet Wet Wet!

The band name is all one word - you're going to need to think fairly both fairly literally and phonetically/syllabically.

There should be a hyphen between "time" and "based" in the speech bubble in photo 3 :)

The Dandy Warhols?

There should be, I'd definitely fail my KS1 tests!
