FA Youth Cup final 29th April 1986

I must be getting very old.
Don't remember the Trafford Tramps having 2k fans at Maine Road for this ?
The memory I have from the match, was that City were dominant and controlled the game.
At the time, City seldom did this in a Derby game, so the optimism during and after the match was a rare emotion..
The rags had the away fans Kippax corner (including the open bit) and Platt Lane

Calling @Gary James to the room!
It's funny how some dates resonate. 29/4 probably was the first repeat success date (though I've not checked and there'll be Central League, Manchester Cup etc. successes too that you could argue we should include). It could've been repeated much earlier as the 1933 FA Cup final (which we lost) was also on 29/4.

The 1968 and 2014 League titles were both won on 11/5, as was promotion in 1985 (though no trophy for that), so that was our first repeating date for League successes.

A great night although a rather dubious attendance of about 18000 reported.
Proper Swales era, taxman adjusted attendance figure that
A brilliant night
I remember a Stokie mate being really excited about them signing Ian Scott and boasting that they’d had us over on the fee.
I told him to cool his jets, and history proved us right

11/5 is consistently in City's history...

Went to both legs. City were by far the better team in both games and if it wasn't for Gary Walsh in their goal having a blinder, it would have been 6 or 7 easily.
Greatest goalkeeping performance for a u21 I’d ever seen he was set for a great future I think he got some kind of head injurywhich fucked him up just as he’d broken into the rags team

We’d have been at least 4 or 5 up going into the Maine Rd game but for him

That’s a bit harsh, he picked up an injury which forced him to retire at the age of 25

David James pushed him close a few years later, when Watford beat us in the final, thanks almost entirely to him.

That was a good team in 1989
Neil Lennon, Gerry Taggart, Ashley Ward, Mike Sheron, Mike Quigly, Ian Thompstone and Michael Hughes
Oh. And Martin Margetson
Lennon, Taggart, Ward, Sheron and Hughes all went on to have lengthy league careers. Quigley seemed to be a permanent fixture in the old Central League and Margetson somehow ended up coaching for England.

Plus Ashley Ward, who had a career in the lower leagues mainly but is now worth a lot of money outside of football!!!!
