York away

Attending Wrexham away, the game after York, on Boxing Day, with no public transport, pissing down with rain, in shithole city where to locals wanted to
fight you, should be the historic game.

Not a lovely city like York, with famously great pubs, easy to get to, friendly locals, and a chance to have a good away day in the build up to Christmas.

Was that the last goal in Craig Russell's glittering City career.?A Frank Clark special, swapped for Summerbee, signed as a striker, played mostly as a sort of wingback IIRC.
That’s correct. It was the last of his four goals for City. Half of that total came a few weeks earlier when he notched a brace in the FA Cup win over Halifax - the only time we’ve been involved in the first round during the modern era.

Not often we could say we won our first two FA Cup ties and went out in the 3rd round.

York is the historic game because at the end of it, City were 12th in Division 3 - the lowest ever in the history of City

And yes. I swear I was there!

Lots of Pubs we went in on the day seemed to have Happy Hours going on as well -though there was also a rumour of a Leeds mob supposedly around town but we never saw them

Not sure that's right mate. Weren't we lower than that when they published the table after the first 4 games?

Edit. Just checked on 11v11.com and we were 14th after the completion of matchday 4 on 29 August 1998.

I was there that game but not York away. Was bloody freezing. Remember Terry Cooke was on loan and was excellent that day. season started there.

YES MY FRIEND! I've been saying this for years. Defeat at York left us in our worst ever league position - we weren't at our worst when tickets were bought and people set off to watch it.

The week after, we were in our lowest league position ever and people STILL decided to go to Wrexham.

I didn't go but I was there.....
I think Reading away at Elm park midweek should be a badge of honour, think it ended in a 4-0 loss, that was a long trip home

Was that the season before?

I didn't go to York but went to the midweek game at Wycombe a few games before. Lost 1-0. Think that was the start of a 5 game run without a win ending in that York defeat.

Loved Bristol Rovers away towards the end of the season. 2-2 I think?
