Holidays in America?

Have been a few times....admittedly all to Orlando, Florida...really enjoyed it at the time.....but it wouldnt be anywhere near the top of my list of potential holidays....and stories like this dont sit well either

Irish guy over stayed his 90 day visa by three days, as he was told he couldnt travel for medical reasons. Of course rules are rules etc, but to be locked up for 100 days is a bit excessive
That story simply isn't true, certainly not in the way it's been presented.

There's a lot more to it apparently. But one media outlet runs it and others pick it up unquestioningly.
Yes I read that and agree with you. Right towards the end of the story (and most likely a few paragraphs after most readers had given up) it said he was arrested in a hotel after a fellow resident called the police. It said he had “a mental episode” and the police charged him with false imprisonment - a charge his girlfriend said didn’t happen, but something did happen!

Had that incident not happened he’d never have been picked up and could have flown home a few days later

And I also read he could have extended his visa but didn't go through the correct procedure.

Last time I was coming back from Canada I had to fly Vancouver to Seattle to change planes and the guy at Vancouver immigration said how long will you be staying in America and when I said only about 3 hours he said good choice! ;-)
Funny, same question was asked of us last time we flew to Vancouver. When we told him three weeks he said ‘that’s not nearly enough time’.

Depends on your principles. I have never been when he has been in charge and will not go again whilst he is. Those are my principles.

The story about the Irish guy is true, but the reporting in the Guardian was shocking and buried what actually happened. I feel sorry for him regardless, but use your head. Don't play games with visas. Don't get arrested in a foreign country. Certainly don't combine the two, wherever you are in the world.

So his girlfriend (the “victim”) says that wasn’t the case and wasn’t to press charges

He was told close to when he was due to leave he couldnt travel…he “missed” the deadline due to being unexpectedly injured/unwell…he certainly tried, including getting the required documentation from the doctor

And regardless, considering his situation and alleged “crime”….do yous honestly think he deserved to be locked up in such a manner for 100days?

It's that bad that people are fighting on the streets to stay in it.
47.8 million foreign-born in 2023.

The number of foreign-born residents in the United States grew from 41.3M in 2013 to 47.8M in 2023.

1 in 7 residents in the United States are foreign-born.

In 2023, California had the highest foreign-born population share at 27.3%, while West Virginia had the lowest at 1.8%. El Salvador had only 25,338 naturalizations. I guess that is more than any European country.

Of course not, but if you end up in immigration custody that's often what happens. ICE has the right to detain you and make sure you leave. The system is swamped and everything takes forever.

Remember he was arrested traveling down in Georgia from WV, which didn't help his claim that he couldn't travel back to Ireland. Combine that with getting picked up in a domestic incident, with apparent mental health issues, and you can see the logic for keeping him off the streets. It's an ugly incident but I don't think it should concern people coming over on holiday for a couple weeks.

In Florida at the moment in the middle of a 2 week family holiday, had zero issues, same as always coming to the States. Found all migration officers, Police and security I've come across as friendly people. Simply have the right paper work and don't break the law and you will be absolutely fine. Oh and don't listen to everything you hear or read in the news.

Last time I was there in 2017 the i4 was horrendous, basically a 24 hour car park, it also pissed it down every day but it was June.

It puzzles me why people want to go to Disneyland let alone America as well.

I dont like Disney, I dont like guns so I'll never go to America
I’ve been here 14 years and never once seen a gun pulled on anyone.
In Florida you have more chance of being attacked by an alligator - and that’s unlikely to happen too
