Your Most Unhinged Football Take?

David Beckham wasn't that good a footballer. Dead ball specialist with great PR.

Nobody else seems to be able to see it.
I find this one really divisive. I think he was actually a very good hard working player who had definitely mastered one or two techniques. I find the "Scholes was underrated" stuff nauseous, Beckham was a much better player.

Jack has more talent than both ; trouble is , like Besty & Gazza, Jack likes a pint.

Mark Lillis
So that’ll be around the time we had Gordon Davies? 86-87ish. I got my years miles out thinking it was of our Scottish quartet that was sacrificed for that donkey. Yeah and tinking back we wore the pale blue shirt with the cross over bit at the front of the neck with the pale blue piping on it at the top and I’m certain Philips was our sponsor at the time.

Parlane only lasted just over a season (83/84
Melrose probably even less (84/85)
Smith I don’t think played at all after the 84/85 season due to an illness he picked up and Tolmie was gone early Into the 85/86 season
Lillis played the 85/86 season and Christie was employed at the beginning of the 86/87 by McNeill and shipped out very quickly by Frizzell (as well as Robert Hopkins)

Was able to recall this with great ease. Ask me about any game last season and I haven’t got a clue!

I'm with you. But we're not in the minority, many many people say the same: that he was overrated and hyped up beyond belief. He was a pretty good player, you don't play for Real Madrid and get as many caps as he did without having something. But because he was a rag he was put on a pedestal for all to worship when he really did not deserve such adulation.
The ginger pig was an okay-ish player, but another over-hyped player because of who he played for. Had he been at any other club he would not have been able to get away with what he did, he was a nasty fucker who would happily cripple an opponent and snigger about it afterwards.

that isn't unhinged tbf, everyone knows he was bang average but could score a freekick of two.

having nice hair and shagging a spice girl was his only talent.
I think this is horseshit to be honest. He played for United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, PSG and England. If those club sides simply wanted a free kick taker, they'd have signed Juninho Pernambucano. Beckham was on a pedestal and rated better than he possibly was, but he was still an extremely good footballer.

Christ Robert Hopkins. I remember again thinking he was a brilliant signing from Birmingham, how wrong could I have been! Good job I wasn’t employed as our manager :)

I agree, in fact Terry Cooke was keeping him out of the class of 92 lineup at one point. There is a famous picture a of all the top players, and Cooke is seen as being level with Scholes, Neville etc.

Beckham was a good free kick taker. But he was not some galactico all-time great. Most of his profile was inflated because he was with a Spice Girl and did tons of modelling. If he was less nice looking he would have been forgotten and unhyped.

Those other teams didn't sign him for his football ability. They signed him because he was good at selling merchandise and securing sponsor deals due to his modelling work.

Ha I though Lee Badbuy was going to be a fantastic player for us from that friendly at Burnley.....my lad reminds me of this every time we disagree on tactics during a game.
I went to the league game where city and Burnley drew 2-2, Bradbury actually scored, I thought we were in a parallel universe.
