The save percentage is complete bollocks as a stat, it would only be useful if every keeper faced the exact same shots which obviously can never happen. We dominate the ball, we dont face a lot of shots as a result, teams arent having regular speculative 25 yarders that are easily collected against us. We leave ourselves wide open like no other side and as a result end up facing near impossible situations for the defence and keeper and finally, ederson plays the sweeper role, a hefty chunk of his work involves stopping a chance before it even gets to a shot for him to save, everytime he sweeps up, he prevents a 1v1 and likely goal yet gets zero credit for it in these shots saved ratios. Its just yet another example of a meaningless stat used completely out of context.

As for ederson not commanding his box, really? That's one of his best strengths, hes superb at commanding his box, always has been, our change in defending set pieces in recent years has seen us leave ederson surrounded, unable to come in favour of rigid zonal marking and run blockers, it's not worked very well for us hence why we now have a new set piece coach. Let's see how he sets us up. I'd be surprised if we dont go back to utilising Edersons strength in commanding his box getting the opposition boxers away from him and letting him come for crosses again.
Nonsense, stats are bollocks only when it suits a narrative, and if you don't think Ederson regularly flaps at crosses then you're blind as a bat.

Trafford is a upgrade to Ortega whom i think rotted on the vine. A few seasons ago i felt he was close to Eddie's equal but last season he looked utter shite, slow, lost.

Question is what happens next.

I don't think Traff is #1 calibre.

If he can slot in behind Ed and get a good run of starts, cup ties .. IDK.

Bit of a perfect signing imo, tipped to be the next england No 1 and having that as the backbone of the team will help massively going forward.

It's also a good indicator of the academy doing it's job in terms of producing for the first team, player comes through, spends some time at other clubs to get experience and we bring them back into the team when they are ready.
Exactly this it reinforces the strength of City’s wider development strategy. The pathway is clear, identify talent early, develop them through the academy, let them gain real world experience on loan or sold to other clubs, and bring them back when they’re ready to contribute to a world class team.

Not as an isolated metric it doesn’t.

Scoring more goals than the opponent wins you games and trophies. Having a goalkeeper who prevents the opposition scoring is essential to this.
How much has Ederson contributed in keeping our possession stats so high?

Preventing the opposition having the ball is the best possible way to prevent them from scoring goals.

His passing range and accuracy is essential to this.

Then why do we see quite a few games where we have all the ball yet concede from the opponent having a low number of attacks?

Bizarre stats !

The disrespect for Ederson on here is unreal
He’s won every trophy possible he’s got golden gloves he’s an international footballer who has revolutionised the position
Now suddenly a 22 year old who was shocking last time he was in the Prem is better
Let’s see how good Trafford is when he’s facing Salah and Isak etc
Of course I want Trafford to succeed and it’s probably the right time to ease him in but Ederson is arguably our best keeper ever
The notion he can’t save a shot is simply hogwash
Calm down ffs.

Trafford has the better save %. That’s all people are saying.

Correct
State of some of the morons on here
Imagine thinking a keeper who grew up in our academy in the Pep era, saw off all rivals to become our all conquering EDS first choice, capped at all junior England levels, somehow can’t pass the ball.
Seemingly based on a couple of seasons on loan at EFL long ball merchants
Honestly, I think @Ric should introduce some form of IQ test before some of these mouth breathing cretins are allowed to post on here
What will you do when he kicks you off for failing the test? :—)

James Trafford stats from last season

104 shots faced , 16 goals conceded
88 saves , save percentage of 85%
13 goals prevented via 1v1
29 clean sheets
2 penalties faced , 0 conceded
30 high claims in the box, highest in the league
70.3% pass accuracy
209 accurate long balls
Long ball accuracy of 31% which is average for a keeper.
Average rating of a 7/10
That high claims stat is interesting. Wasn’t that a weakness in his previous premier season?

but you’re comparing a keeper facing elite forwards on a weekly basis to a keeper facing Andy Carroll of course his stats will be better
No keeper faces “elite” forwards on a weekly basis in the PL. There are a handful you could genuinely describe as such.

But if you want to use the PL stats, Ederson was the 10th best shot stopper last season. His save % being only 0.2% better than the source of much hilarity, Onana.

Now, as you and a few others say, we tend to have the bulk of possession in most matches and don’t concede a high number of shots. These stats show, even under those conditions, there were 9 goalkeepers better than Ederson at keeping the ball out of the net last season.

The season before he was 8th, the season before that he was 17th. Imagine if he was playing for a shit team that conceded a lot of chances - it wouldn’t look pretty.

The bottom line is, he isn’t that good at keeping the ball out of the net.

Or just close your eyes and sell willy nilly because you like the money.

Which all goes to prove that the stats confirm what most of us have seen with our own eyes. He has amazing distribution skills but is a very average shot stopper.

Read the last few pages and looked at the BBC site - cannot work out if this is just another rumour or if it is pretty certain he is joining us. Can someone help with a clear answer please?

There's a stat that measures the quality of chances - I cannot remember what it is called.
Ederson has a relatively low save percentage but faces the highest percentage of chances expected to result in goals. That bears out what we see on the pitch.
I am delighted with the signing of Trafford, but no goalkeeper is going to be able to save the gilt-edged chances we conceded last season. A new season beckons, and I think we will be both more resolute, and more efficient in our goal-scoring. It is all in the mix called excitement.

As far as I can see, it's not official. However Ornstein is a pretty reliable journalist and has said the deal is done
The BBC fact check and say it's about to happen.
I would be very surprised if it didn't.
