Online Safety Bill - Thoughts?

Can I ask what controls these are? Is it for apps? To unlock the Home Screen? App Store?

I'll be interested to hear this as well. Seems a bit of a minefield. I remember on my previous ISP (TalkTalk) you can basically restrict adult content at an account level (possibly via DNS) but that is rather restrictive.

On my new ISP (Gigaclear) I'm not sure they offer the same sort of thing even though I thought this was a requirement for the ISPs a few years back.. the only suggestions I can see with them is to block certain websites by device on the router... A whopping ten sites! Crock of shite that is. Interestingly there is a block by category that may be more useful on the FAQ documentation but that seems to be absent on my router firmware.

I've never looked into it but there may be software out there that can be installed onto phones, tablets, PCs etc that has great blocklists of sites that it will stop people getting onto. Only problem with per device blocking is if they sneak another device into the house. Although this could be monitored on your router and it's internet access fully blocked if you did suspect that was happening.

Absolute massive overreach of government control. Don't care what side of the political spectrum you are on issues like this should unite every rational person. Sign the petition here:

We do like a good petition in this country.

Maybe its not the Government's job to parent your children and instead it's your responsibility to teach them about appropriate behaviour and monitor their safety?

Just a thought

Yeah because all kids mistakes and wrong paths come from bad parenting.

There are apps you can put on phones and pc’s etc that log all internet traffic and send the parents reports of anything dodgy. And reports when it’s been disabled etc. Heavy handed but a good start.
Ta thats good to know. I’m a Luddite! We do chat to our girl (16) about what she’s seeing on line and she talks to us. It’s mostly TikTok tho so the tracker thing wouldn’t pick up I guess and I don’t think you could even track all the things she viewed on that?

yep, lazy logic.

Adolescence hit the spot on how easily a child can be swayed down a dark path by the internet and pressures of modern society despite a normal and happy upbringing.

Not sure to be honest with that one. been a while since I heard about them and not kept up with them. If I get some time I'll do some digging just out of curiosity :)

In some ways, yes. But then we restrict children from watching certain films, TV shows and books, so why should YouTube be different?

I’m conflicted on this.
Same here. It’s a difficult decision to make especially as your kids get older, you can’t keep them sheltered from everything as they’ll only see stuff when you’re not watching them, ie a friends tablet or phone who’s parents may not be as strict as you may be.

End of the day you’ve got to explain all the dangers out there and hope that their wise enough to make the correct decisions.
