22 | Vitor Reis - 2025/26 (on loan at Girona)

£30m to loan him out 6 months later. I get it from his perspective because he wants game time.

But the fact others are being kept over him getting a chance is a bit…sad.

Unless (and I hope it’s this) it’s because nobody is biting at the other CBs.

He's a talent and we needed bodies in January. That's all. He's too young to rely on while competing with some of the best teams in the world. He's one for the future. It's not like our other CBs were starting for big clubs when they were 19. Van Dyke was playing for Celtic when he was 22.

Some fans underrate more experienced players and overrate unproven youngsters. We have many talented CBs. At least 1-2 of them will make it at the club, and probably as regular starters.

Stones has been a magnificent player who would have started for Madrid or whoever. ditto Vincent. Otamendi has had a great career, Aymeric underestimated by many.

However whilst good Ake, Akanji and Dias are not at the level as those mentioned above.

Unfortunately all 3 are likely to be starting this season.

This will leave a sour taste in a lot of peoples mouths, but Fergy took a chance on the youngsters in 92 and look what happened.

Players age and the PL is brutal nowadays. There's no room for sentiment.

Persisting with the likes of Bernardo, Gundo and Kovacic will be our downfall next season.

Obviously not down to us but I would have liked him going on loan to Bournemouth as a replacement for Huijsen.

Absolutely it is on us.. spending $50mill on Jan and then insisting to start with the same defense that was in shambles last season and is even more injury prone/older is 100% down to us. We should be giving players chances that we pay that kind of money for or some kind of guarantee imo

Yeah won fuck all last few years, glad hes gone.
There’s a man called Pep who made his work look better imo. He did great for us but in the end it all went stale. Some of the signings and in some positions, lack of and the contracts our players are on are ridiculous.

6 defenders for the whole back line last season, 2 of which are constantly injured, to then have to sign a centre back for 40M in Jan, to then have to loan him out 6 months later because you can’t move anyone on is not a position that’s a result of good work.

Anyone who thought we would go in the season with Reis instead of some experienced CB like Akanji doesn't get Pep and the club. The aim is to compete for the biggest trophies, not to have the youngest team in the PL.

Reis is likely to be a great investment, but he is too young to displace the other CBs. After a season or two at Girona he might be ready to be a starter at City. Maybe already next season. I think he's more likely to succeed here than Khusanov, who has impressive physical attributes but seems a bit limited on the ball.
Why didn't we leave him to develop at his club though? We paid more as we wanted him right away and they wanted to hold on to him for the club world cup, while we just didn't play him?

On balance, he was part of the team that has delivered great success for the team.
We do not really know the reasons for every, single detail of the running of the club, and of who influenced who the later years. We also do not know the state of play with outgoings, other than snippets on social media.
If we end up loaning two teenagers from the whole first-team squad, I don't think we should condemn ourselves.
In an idea world, I would like both to stay. Then, when I look realistically, I see no solid game time for Echeverri in a front-line of Haaland, Marmoush, Foden, Cherki, Savinho, and Doku. We can argue about the odd player, but Echeverri is 18 and will come again. As for Reis: Gvardiol, Dias, Ake, Stones, Khusanov, and Akanji are in his way at CB, and Rodri/Gonzalez at CDM. We do not yet know who will leave from this group.

Because Reis needs to play many games and make mistakes to mature as a CB. Girona is a better place for that. Maybe that was the plan from the beginning.
.
How many of the best defenders right now were starting for the biggest clubs aged 19? VVD was starting for Southampton aged 26...

Anyway, it's difficult to have it both ways: win things and develop talents. We might have played Sancho, Diaz, Palmer, and so on, and it would have been great to watch. But we wouldn't have won big trophies...

Reis and Echeverri are too young to have a serious impact right now. Foden is different, as he is a local lad and was more patient, maybe more talented as well...

I think you are misunderstanding me. I understand he is down the pecking order and will get more game time on loan, but when we signed him we paid more money and wouldn't let him stay on loan with his club we got him from. They wanted him to play in the club world cup for them, we said no.

Yet we didn't play him, in the league or club world cup? Surely he would have developed better playing where he was than sitting on our bench for 7 months?

I don't think it is possible to disagree with this.
The only caveat is that we may have thought that he was more ready that he actually was, or there was a conflict of opinion between the board and manager; we will never know.
A season of games and competition will serve him well, regardless.

We needed bodies in January. We had the worst injury crisis in the last 10 or 20 years. Plus, we played Reis in several games.

Highly likely Stones and Ake will miss half the season. Which leaves Dias Gvardiol Akanji and Khusanov.

Having 4 CBs is normal, we have other players for the FB positions. Yes, if we have another injury crisis, then having Reis is nice. But if we don't, then he will struggle to make the match group, let alone play.

Was that the shambles that meant City went unbeaten for 14 games to qualify for the champions league at the end of last season? With the established players?

As @alexmcity said above - you wont compete at the level with a team of kids - you need the balance. No doubt Reis is one for the future but I suspect Khusanov is the one that will be brought though this year with the experienced players then Reis will be next year.

A first choice of inexperienced Reis and Khusanov would be the mistake (in my opinon).

I note the comment above about Fergie winning with kids but that 92 team had Cantona, Hughes, Mcclair, Ince, Robson, Kanchelksis, Irwin, Bruce etc in the side to bring the balance.

Yep. We also have too many players in our squad. Stones is out of contract next summer, so a spot will open up. Ake and Akanji the summer after, so that's another two spots (although I imagine we'd listen to offers for both). It makes sense for youngsters to be sent out on loan and then brought back when those spots become available if they've proven themselves.

I read this morning that he’s going to Girona on loan. That’s probably the right decision. I think this guy looks like a huge talent and a great prospect and a year of regular game time will help his development.
Looking forward to seeing him back here.

Yes, I think that's what we all wish for.
I hope we are entering a new phase where players can leave on loan, perform, and return to be a part of the first-team, and the same with sales with buy-backs, like James Trafford. The best young players have to believe that there are genuine opportunities or, by the time they reach 18, the Dortmunds of this world will be circling.

I think Ake is as good as anyone.
