How did they ever think they were going to succeed in that claim? Preposterous litigation.

People on here claimed it was a slam dunk when first publicised.

Thing is, what it really shows is that a private education doesn't help critical thinking: a bare modicum of which would have made the private school litigants realise only lawyers were ever going to profit from this.

The only caveat to this statement is that the lawyers who represented them would also probably have been privately educated.

Many indebted poorly managed schools have in fact been cast a lifeline by Labour as they can close their doors - default on loans - leave kids high and dry and blame it on someone else

I assume the gov were not convinced by people who forecast school closures. Now they have a serious problem that is totally unnecessary. VAT is not the cause but it is the last straw.
And it’s holding up our PL charges decision as the panel wait for Pannick to be free.

Both my parents were teachers in state schools. Teachers in state schools have to be qualified.
I always thought it was odd that parents would pay for private schools for their kids to be taught by unqualified staff.

I worked in a local private school for two years, what an eye opener, all fur coat and no knickers. On the outside it looked really posh but go round the back of builds and it was falling down ! The sports turf maintenance equipment was well over 30yrs old.

Yet the headmaster was on at least 100k with a free car, free cleaning, free food, he didn't have to spend a penny. This head master tends to leave his post with immediate effect. One minute he is there the next day 'gone'.
All lot of the teachers had free housing on site.

The teachers all tend to be ex public school themselves some even went to the school as kids.

Because you're not paying for the best teachers, you're paying to not have your children be educated with the riff raff.

Shocking new figures show a decline in private school pupils of *checks figures* 1.85%! How will the public sector cope? Pretty well it seems as public sector numbers fell by 0.7%. Low birthrate is a factor in both sectors apparently. Who knew.

Clearly, we need a new 30% VAT level for private schools because 20% just isn’t getting the numbers down as we were promised on here and in the Mail and Telegraph etc.

What do we want? 30%!

Some of that decline will be down to wider economic issues, as well. There is no doubt that many people’s disposable income (which school fees must surely be classified as) have been subject to material reduction in the last three years, as they come off cheap mortgages and have to deal with energy and food price inflation. The middle classes won’t be entirely exempt from this phenomenon, it’s just the choices some of that cohort will have had to make don’t extend to a choice between heating the house or eating.

Living standards have decreased for many in the last three years and a reduction in numbers in private education is surely going to be concomitant of that, as much as low birth rates will be.

Kids have been pulled out of private education for centuries for financial reasons. It didn’t start in 2025, with the imposition of VAT on school fees.

I do find it hilarious that private schools who are teaching our future Tory MP's and business leaders, can't get their own books to balance without subsidies from the government. No wonder all the recent Tory PM's and Chancellors made the economy and national debt worse.

If it is a choice between a disabled person getting the PIP cut, or VAT on tuition fees, I don’t think we should even be a question. Its not a question of envy, its a question of necessity. The party most of these people vited for, fucked up the economy for a decade. This is the result. You're party blew all the money. You voted for that. You had Brexit, the single most damaging economic decision we have ever taken.

They left a £40b hole. Being asked to contribute to filling the hole your party dug seems bang on to me..

If you go out for a drink with your pals and one of them is skint, you dont send him home, you stand him drinks. Because you're not a ****. Same deal. People who can spare a few bob due to their earnings, should. Only my opinion.
