I really think within the next few years we will see a big shift in the way teams manage their squads. I think Chelsea last season showed a glimpse of it with their cup squad.
The squads will get bigger, at first it might have to be down the chelsea route of leaving youngsters out of certain squads but eventually they'll extend the 25 man squad rule to accomodate. Its the only genuine solution to the increasing schedule as we know the games arent going to stop coming.

Like you say, it's a lot easier to leave players out of the conference league, you can even frame it as players being too important and giving them a rest, different kettle trying that in the CL though and I dont even think they will try it this season but theres some groundwork laid. It's going to take some bold calls and there's going to be some ruffled feathers on the way to start it but eventually it'll become the norm where you have a handful of players exclusive for individual competitions. It gives them an opportunity to sort things, it's not just finalising a move, it's sorting everything outside of the pitch, potentially moving house etc and them not going also removes the threat of injury. There's no benefit to bringing grealish or the others who are being shipped out.
