Lowering the drink driving limit

For going out properly and knowing you will break the drink drive limit then yes I agree with those things.

But for a spur of the moment drink on a Sunday trip or after work etc. Then a £6 pint becomes a £46 taxi trip, a 4 hour round bus journey etc.
I'd sooner pay that than live with the guilt of ruining someone else's life due to my own selfishness. Go to the local store, by a 4-pack, drink them at home if you just want a drink. You want to drink socially, be responsible.

We seem to be seeing a generational shift away from drinking full stop. I can see it going the way of smoking in years to come where it’s frowned upon. I get the sense that late teens/early 20 somethings are just not interested in alcohol. I maybe entirely wrong but that’s my perception.
Yep the generations of piss heads are slowly fading away, these new kids on the block are not interested in boozing like we were, hence why all the pubs are closing down, it's not the 80s/90s anymore, them days are gone

As opposed to risking yours/others lives by having a couple of pints and then driving down unlit country lanes

I wasn't specifically directing it at you, but there will be a large number of people that drive for a couple of pints, who could quite easily walk
Well the car has headlights, me walking doesn’t. I hardly think I am risking lives on 2 pints of low abv beer

We had random drink and drugs testing since about 2011. Even just walking through the door meant you were intending to work and a computer generated staff list of who was on duty would decide who got tested. The testers were in about once or twice a week initially but that dropped to about once a month. The limit was 0.02 on booze and zero on drugs. If they suspected it, they could take a hair sample for a long term drug reading.
And your last line says an awful lot about our nanny state.
You cannot go to a pub Sunday to Friday. Neither can you drink at home during that time. You cannot even have a spliff on Friday night..
Welcome to hell.
Sunday football without a few beers, the same mid week.
Perhaps they should also be allowed to look at your mobile phone as well.

Drinking is on the rise it's just that people aren't using pubs as often.

Smoking is also on the rise, new kids on the block do what they fucking want ;-)

Completely unrelated situation. An estimated 6000 people every year are killed or injured by drunk driving. One drink is too many. If you need to drive to get to your nearest pub, choose a better way of getting there.
6,000 bollocks. A quick Google search show an estimate of 260 in 2024.

That's black and white, it's also obvious.
What about having 5 pints at home, are you over the limit the next day ?
How quick would it leave upir system?

I was always told it's an hour for every unit after you've finished your last drink.

So 5x 440ml cans of Murphy's Stout at 1.8 units per can would be 9 units. If you finish your last drink at 10pm then it would not be clear from your system until around 7am the following morning.

It's not after you've finished your last drink, it's a soon as you start drinking because your body start metabolising it straight away. So technically if you drunk a pint over 2 hours there wouldn't be much in your system.

So guesswork then. A lot of people will be losing their licence.
No one should drive drunk but be careful what you wish for.

Yes guesswork.

The calculation here actually adds a few hours onto my estimate. Putting it at 9am for 4 pints of 568ml beer at 2.3 units to clear

But I'm sure meeting in the middle assuming they are playing it safe when their estimations. This is a car insurance company after all! Then perhaps 8am is probably a more reasonable answer. And at that point you are either clear altogether or very near to being clear and comfortably under the limit.

The tricky bit is for shift workers who do say a 6am start. They really have to be careful on knowing when to stop as they'll be on the road a fair bit earlier than your typical day shift worker.

Driving standards seem to be getting worse and worse. Most drivers appear to be selfish and in a rush to get wherever they are going and most of them are presumably sober.

Maybe if everyone had a few pints before they got in the car they might chill the fuck out a bit.

How anybody could advocate driving whilst under the influence is beyond me. Even if it is just a sip. I don't care.

Anybody who drives after a drink should be banned for life.

I think they are erring on the side of caution there. It's a very simplified view. They aren't asking how long you were drinking for, just when you stopped. If you neck 4 pints in an hour then stop you'll have more in your system 9 hours later than if you had 4 pints over 4 hours.

The whole point of it is that you aren't driving intoxicated. Many people's tolerances are different. Two pints for you might be nothing, for others it might make them impaired. Hence the need for lowering.

What about the people who crash when they are completely sober, What's their excuse?

Ahh, right. I live in the countryside. Do you know of any websites I can nominate a designated driver when wifey says, why don’t you pop out for a swift half whilst I prepare your tea dear.

I live in the countryside. If I'm driving and go to a pub, I stick to Guinness 0.0 or a soft drink. Nobody actually needs alcohol.
