Lowering the drink driving limit

there's plenty more... you take my point over where the blame lies (apart from personal responsibility of course)

How anybody could advocate driving whilst under the influence is beyond me. Even if it is just a sip. I don't care.

Anybody who drives after a drink should be banned for life.
I bet everyone has done that though, they will judge others but do it themselves and think it is fine the day after then have no idea when 1pm the next day they get done and go on about their slow metabolism.

If you have a big session you don't know when it is safe to drive unless you have an accurate testing kit, which most people don't so risk it some time the day after.

anyone bemoaning that they wont be able to ‘have a couple’ and drive home needs to admit that after 2 pints you are slightly pissed and definitely impaired.

So for 58 years the authorities have deemed that the current law was satisfactory and deemed drinking a pint OK to drive. If you try and Google how many people were injured or killed by drivers just over the legal limit there are no statistics, why? Surely these things are recored. Will reducing the limit save more lives? Personally I doubt it, as other have pointed out if you're that much of a **** to jump in a car after 5 pints then that isn't going to change. The cynic in me says there's a lot of money to be made from this and a good way of reducing cars on the road.
It's well known that cognitive reaction times slow in people over 60. Why isn't there mandatory tests every year after 60 to see if you're OK to drive? There are people in their 60's, 70's and 80's that should be nowhere near a car but are perfectly legal to drive.

Sober 60 and 70 year old's have faster reaction times than those over the drink drive limit.

Cognitive reaction times start declining in people after they reach their mid 20's, but the peak age for having an accident in the UK is those younger than 25 years old.

Maybe we should ban everyone under the age of 25 getting anywhere near a car.

It would make a huge contribution to road safety, and allow us old gits with years of experience go about our day without having to make allowances for young idiots with no road sense.

Just a thought.

So forever it has been deemed okay for people to drive slightly pissed(haha on that term) and definitely impaired.

Sure sure

So let's reduce it further to save lives like in Scotland cry the hard of thinking.

AI Overview

No, reducing the legal blood alcohol limit in Scotland to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood did not lead to a reduction in road traffic accidents,

Now nunptiy posters may scream but yeah pissed up people are cunts in their never ending stupidity when that isn't even the discussion but let's change something that will make no difference.

So what causes accidents

Speeding - yet we allow cars that can go over 100mph or accelerate rapidly. Is there any need for either ? No. Do we do anything? No

Tiredness- we work long hours, there is no limit on how long someone can drive except professional drivers who drive too long. Do we do anything? No

Distraction - taking your eye off the road yet we have billboards and flashing signs all.over the place Do we do anything? No

Loud music - yet cars have loud sound systems. Do we do anything ? No

Distraction in cars like hands free mobiles or huge sat nav screens Do we do anything? No

Pedestrians doing stupid fucking things like walking out.into the road.

And then just general cuntish dangerous driving

Old people who literally have no idea what they are doing anymore and often have very slow response times and poor eyesight.

Now if someone has had a pint of Fosters when they do any of the above it's because they are pissed up cunts(pmsl) say the hard of thinking.

If they do it with or without a Fosters then whatever happens happens anyhow.

But some pillocks want to put it down to a weak lager, some want to put it down to a shandy and some of the really hard of thinking want to put it down to a sherry trifle:-)

No.one has said driving over the limit is right, this is about what the limit should be. Why are people making stuff up or going on about pissed up arseholes

It's about the limit, just like the thread title says:-)
The most sensible post so far. Why do people go off on a tangent. Some on here would make good politicians preaching morals. The thread was NOT should there be a zero drink driving limit.

You can be impaired for many reasons, illness, stress, tiredness, upset, etc are you advocating an impairment test and an immediate ban for all who fail it.

People don't think and just go off on one and then won't back down. The story is reducing the legal limit slightly to prevent accidents.

It.is bluemoon though..:-)

Like all Laws, there must be a cost v benefit analysis. Reducing the limit will certainly affect a lot of people, reducing freedom of choice and liberty but the great unknown is,what is the benefit to Society.
There has been a lot of quotes on accident statistics on the thread.
As with most accidents there is usually one party at fault.
However all parties are breathalysed whoever is at fault.
I am not condoning anyone driving over the limit but within those statistics there will be some accidents that could not have been prevented even if one of the parties had not been over the limit.
That’s the way accidents work.
In my opinion the current limits are designed to catch the serious drink drivers who, because of the amount of alcohol in their system, are likely to have a significant impact on their ability to drive.
The limits should stay as they are.

To be fair, I think there is something in limiting young drivers or increaseling the driving age. The most deaths are caused by under 25's. How many lives would be saved if you couldn't start driving till 25? But the government wouldn't go near that with a barge pole.

So he lied
Hence the word "claimed".

However, there is a notion that certain people are not affected as much by alcohol. This is true to a degree regarding their physiological state, but the tests are not looking for that, they are testing for a level of alcohol in the bloodstream.

I know that, j just said he lied. Like I've said people have gone off on some mad tangents. The question should only be is reducing the limit slightly going to have a big or even small affect on people's driving in the real world.

Scotland and common sense dictates not, I'm open to logical persuasion but not downright stupidity in relation to the actual story itself.

I usually get the bus/ tram to go to any of the Wetherspoons in the towns surrounding Manchester,so I can have a few pints of real ale.
However,on the odd occasion that I do drive to a pub in the countryside ( usually while we are on holiday) ,I have developed a taste for Guinness Zero and I can't recommend it enough.
No chance of losing my driving licence when the pint I am drinking has absolutely no alcohol in it.
Guinness zero is my drink of choice now, I was sick of feeling shit the next day but couldn’t stomach drinking Diet Coke etc on a night out, I’m out Friday and driving and drinking it if it’s available which it is more and more. Chatting to a lad behind the bar he said the biggest jumpin sales these days is non alcoholic drinks like Guinness and gins.

Good. You're much more likely to have an accident the morning after due to the combined effects of the alcohol and lack of quality sleep.
Did a job of the M57 a few years ago, crash actually stopped traffic on the other side of the carriageway, so a big traffic jam ensued, this was the night after England had played in a semi final. Lots of police around, as the the traffic was allowed to move a car didn’t, copper walked up and the guy in the drivers seat was asleep, he was still steaming from the night before, needless to say he was nicked, had he not been in that jam he’d have drove pissed to his job, hope the **** got banned and lost his job.

Too many people like to drive fast, are bad at driving or don't pay due care and attention. I'm not sure what can be done about this.

Lowering the legal limit like Scotland is the easiest option and doesn't appear to have done anything. One expects the govt to take the easy and pretty useless option mind:-)
