Fans turning to lower league football

I gave up my season ticket a couple of seasons ago. The group of us going dwindled to just cousin and me. He is a Cop, so missed many games through shifts, and I'd end up driving there and back alone, yes I got to know people around me in the stadium, but no beers or craic in town before or afterwards with mates as before. Then on moving away I didn't fancy driving further for the same thing. (and trains are too unreliable)

The cost wasn't a factor, luckily can afford it, but it was for others in our group, especially nephews, who just couldn't afford it at all.

Now looking at trying nearby clubs like Fleetwood and AFC Fylde with couple of mates in the Fylde area too. It will never replace my City, but I'll enjoy the match going experience.
I drive from Thornton every game, 60 miles from my door to Ashton Moss, love the drive with my music on, going to the best ground in England watching one of the best teams in Europe, totally different from Maine Road, totally different from the City we all grew up with, but its still our club!!,

An admission. I like ballet. Let me qualify that, I like watching very top end ballet, national companies, like the Moscow State ballet performing a classsic, Swan Lake, THe Nutcracker etc...im there, with the Mrs.
I have no interest in watching lardy local theatre companies with sweaty leotards stumbling around to a creaky backing track, barely able to get on their toes None whatsoever....at whatever cost.
I get the point, and I feel the same in terms of quality. But we didn’t get into city because they were top tier ballet did we. It’s not about the standard, it’s about city being our club so many feel they can’t go elsewhere which I absolutely get. I go to a few Altrincham games and enjoy it, as others have said it’s old school and much more enjoyable as an experience. No cheesy circus pre match and half time, no cheesy stadium announcer and a fraction of the cost. Don’t get me wrong I’m not going mental when they score, not really arsed about the result but going back to the original post, it’s about getting that proper football fix. I don’t enjoy city home games but still go, if I ever stopped I’d probably go to lower league games a bit more for that experience rather than saying I support that club.

The fact is that more people are watching football. When started watching City, they were getting crowds of anything from 8,000+ to 15,000 in a 63,000 capacity stadium in the Second Tier. At that time Stockport were attracting less than 3,000 for home matches.

Now City are getting 55,000 (soon rising to 60,000+) while County are getting 10,000. For all Premier League matches, and many lower leagues games, the ground capacity poses the limit on attendances.

It is nonsense (and insulting) to suggest that those going to lower league matches are doing so purely because of PL prices. If there are people switching it is more likely to be down to unavailability of tickets than prices.
8,000 to 15,000, when was that?

Took my 5yo son to watch Oldham v Colchester on Saturday as we live nearby. £20 for me and £3 for him. That is both tickets for less than it has cost for his ticket for the upcoming Spurs game. Oh and no joining fee.

The football is nowhere near what we get to see at the Etihad, and of course we both don't feel the excitement we feel at City. But, the difference in price really does make a difference, and I will probably go and see them again as I have no chance of getting away tickets, even after years of being a season ticket holder.
£20! You've been diddled

I don't think I could follow another club. I used to go to Gigg or Spotland once or twice a season if we were away, but I've long since lost that passion for live football. I keep an eye out for Stockport too with the nephew in their academy, but I haven't been able to afford a season ticket/card for us for a while. Well, I can afford it, I just don't think it's worth the cost any more and priorities and shit.

A mate of mine gave up his season ticket after covid, he used to go home and away with City, now watches Warrington Town, he has no interest in returning to City which i find strange.

The Stockport County thing is just bandwagon jumping now Stockport is trendy and County are doing pretty well.

I know several lifelong rags who now plaster County shite all over their social media acting like they're massive fans, when in reality they only started taking an interest a year ago.

It's all pretty embarrassing tbh.

Went to 'Bridge Celtic last night.
Played Atherton.
Decent enough game (well second half was) and cost £12.
Jon Macken's Bridge won 1-0

Beat sitting in and doing nowt.

This is a very similar story for me. My last season with a ticket at City was 2019, I then had kids and couldn't afford to keep it. I live up in Buxton now and both my lads play for the club and I coach my youngest lads team. They both get season tickets so I take them along to a few games a season, £15 for me is steep for non league in my opinion but as my lads are free it's not too bad. Meet up with some mates stood on the terraces and have a few pints whilst watching football that's a pretty decent standard. Bucko have just signed Sodje from City as well so I'm interested to see how he gets on in the first game of the season tomorrow.

I still love City and take my lads to a couple of games a season, mainly cup games as they are reasonably priced and I watch most games on the TV but I definitely feel a lot further away from the club than I used to be but I'm fine with that.

They've got some ambition Buxton, the owner (Hopkins) is doing his best to back them. They beat Radcliffe 2-1 at weekend so a good start. Macclesfield are in this league too.
I seem to think True Grant (City U18s) played in nets last season?

My last season ticket at City was the 100 point season. I had just split from my partner and my son was to young to take so would miss a lot of games.
I started watching Curzon ashton because it was around the corner from me and my son played in the youth team, this enabled to get him in for free and me for 3 quid.
The games felt like old times at maine road, there would be a few dads from the youth football, take beer out into the stand, no FFP/PSR!. Obviously still supported city (via the tv).
Moved to North Yorkshire and tried watching Darlington, it was OK but it's 17 quid to get in and I'm a curzon fan!
Darlos only £16, a quids a quid! ;)
If you have kids under 12 with you they are free.

I am a season ticket holder at Darlo ( long story wont bore you ) but its mainly to support the club as I only manage about 5 home games a season, £280 a season works out at just over £12 a game.

Its a good atmosphere at Darlo too.

I don’t know about turning to lower league football , I go watching Atherton Cols if City aren’t playing …
