82 | Rico Lewis - 2025/26

Meant to post this here when I did:

Btw, a bit late on this as well, but Rico's ability to make the kind of run we saw him make to get into that position for Reijnders' brilliant pre-assist, is a testament to his intelligence and quality.

Is he a few inches too short? Sure, but when I hear that he gets "overpowered" I wonder if some are willing to consider that:

- Rico's nowhere near the age where he will "fill out",

i.e. gaining weight and with the kind of work ethic and determination he has gain strength

and utilise enough and savvy enough due to his high football IQ to figure out how to keep proving his critics wrong

Seems his age is forgotten as he's been in the side for 3 seasons, but he was 18 years old getting more time than Foden did!

When he came in it was not exactly in the most ideal circumstances, can we not forget? Wonder if some placed extraordinary high expectations on his growth and are disappointed by this, also given the deficiencies that he has that I do not know other than height, are reasons to assume he can't be good enough.

At 18 Rico outperformed top level veterans and displaced them and by all measures was not just about Pep making a point, but merit for what we saw on the pitch.

He was also socially isolated (as we saw in Netflix Together doc, in the dressing room after that one match) and still came to do his job.

- One of his 2 reported inspirations are Muhammed Ali and his father whom we met in Netflix Together the latter is also a direct genetic influence. Remember what his father does and how he spoke? It stood out to me as "Ohh that's why Rico is who he is."

He's had some setbacks, but here's a quote from the MEN on Rico and this in particular:

For me, sure sometimes these are just words, but based on what we've seen when he is counted out, given the maturity and age these words match what we've see on the pitch.

All whilst undersized, and without the most pace...Yet, he is a pest in defence, strong at ball retention, and makes intelligent runs (as referenced).

I'm curious given these signs what is the significant enough argument to with absolute confidence state he will never make it here?

Do we wonder if that's ever been said to him before?

I will state, OF COURSE, he MIGHT NOT MAKE IT. But I think it's too early to write him off, and I would much rather keep him, OR...If it is that he goes, I hope it's with the idea that there's a buyback with the notion that he WANTS to return, which I gather he would, if after a season or 2 elsewhere he develops and shows it in a side that isn't full of top level talent...

An argument I know some make against him regularly.

NOTE: To Clarify "Pre-Assist" from the link I added, including for those who find these words "frustrating" or "problematic" and willing to challenge what we think (up to you):

"At the elite level of football, the concept of a pre-assisters aka initiatives is highly regarded by coaching staff and scouts.

A pre-assist, is the pass or action that sets up the assist.

It is the play that initiates the attacking sequence leading to a goal
, and it holds significant strategic value...

...on identifying players who excel in delivering pre-assists, as these players often demonstrate exceptional vision, creativity, and technical skills."

seems to have added a cross-field pass to his repertoire; he was decent today

Got lucky with an assist. The rest was slow, short passing and no contribution.
I hope we sign proper RB this window.

he was one of our best players today. Apparently he’s not good enough though.
He did well today, but I’ll be interested to see how he fares in some of our other games if he starts, starting with Spurs next week.

You wouldn’t expect me or anyone else to change their long term view of a player based on one match against the team a few think will finish bottom 4. I still don’t think he’s good enough for our starting XI.

Just give him this one mate!

I thought he was great today. If he wants to stay and fight for a place then that shows the right character IMO. So I would be happy if we keep him. If we do sell him to Forest then I hope we put a buy back clause in.

that is why we need to encourage him to stay - he played the exact role Pep wants from that inverted fullback, and I don’t think we have any one else who can play that way on the right hand side.

He linked with the centre backs, linked well with Bobb as he has always done when we have seen them together. He seems to be creating a good understanding with Reijnders (there were signs v Palermo as well) - which produced the first goal. And when Larsson trued to wind him up he showed he is not to be messed with - just what we need.

Some of us don’t need third season in a row with Rico experiment in the midfield. He starts the season and he ends on the bench. He has no attributes to play world class football in our team. He is not strong, not quick enough.

I am OK with him as a 20men squad member. In order to compete Barca, Madrid etc we need world class RB.
