OK let's say I agree but how that solves defensive issues ? :D
I was making a unique point about the best fit for an inverted system when i made that claim.
We have plenty options in attack - Haaland, Reijnders, Foden, Cherki, Bobb, Marmoush
Our football is interwoven. Yes, those individuals are supremely talented. But a disjointed defense that cant get the ball forward quickly to those players and support them with intelligent runs will eventually diminish the effectiveness of the players you've mentioned and their talents. So its not really either or, it's both :)
What we need is stable and solid defence, otherwise you score 3 goals and receive 4..
Nothing i have said prior is controversial, but this will be... I think his intelligence does not stop on offense, he is similarly (IMHO) one of the most tactically aware defenders we've had in the Pep era.
He simply stays consistently in the right position, always aware of the offside line and knows how to stall attacking players to limit the danger .
None of these actions are super high intense tackles or last second blocks. But they all play a role in keeping things clean.
We need "defensive intelligence", player who can cover physical weaknesses with brain and knowledge of game and always choosing right positions, thus making him ahead of time, but unfortunately Rico can't do that.
He does
Also that "attacking intelligence" should somehow convert into statistics right ? Have you seen Rico's stats ?
Had an assist in the last 2 games he has started. Scored in the FA cup semi-final. Its not some gimmick claim that he is intelligent. He actually is :)
Matheus for example had 15 goal contributions last season, Rico had 5 and that was his career high.
Results and end-product, otherwise we are talking about theory here..
Nunes is very good too. I don't deny that. But so is Rico. I am so confident, i am happy to wait and we can discuss mid season or at season's end.
I have no doubt his production is about to spike and match his obvious tactical intelligence.
