Manuel Akanji | Rumours of an Inter loan deal

It's not that simple.

First, if we are happy to have 2 injury prone CBs and if we want to avoid an injury crisis stopping us from competing for the big trophies again, then we need more CBs. The other clubs don't have two injury prone CBs, that's why they can have 4-5. Also, it remains to be seen whether Dias has completely recovered from his injury problems.

Second, our RB position is somewhat weak. Some of the CBs are expected to feature there against the best PL and CL teams, say, Stones or Khusanov. I like Nunes a lot, but he isn't a natural defender. He can be excellent against average teams, but it's risky to start him against the better teams. Same with Lewis. We need a proper defender there in the big games. Right now, only a CB can fill the position in such games with success.
What do we do if all 6 stay fit?

Hahahahahahaha
Ha, yeah I know, highly unlikely. But as he’s using hypotheticals of another injury crisis like last season then only fair to use the opposite end of the spectrum as an example.

He’s just being obstinate for obstinate’s sake though, it’s patently obvious we can’t carry 6 central defenders in our squad numbers, just never going to happen without leaving us short elsewhere.

And also, Gvardiol only minor knock so could quite easily be this weekend we have all 6 fit and available.

I’d say that is a fantastic problem to have. Finally, people over look the issues we had with injuries at the back last season(s)

How likely is that?

What do we do if Stones, Ake, and Dias miss 2-4 months again? Run Gvardiol in the ground again?

Edit: most of the current CBs can play different positions, both at CB and FB. Gvardiol and Ake can play at LB, Khusanov, Stones and Akanji at RB. Only Dias can't play at FB.

To represent those 6 as only CBs is misleading. We have only one proper FB in RAN. 5 of those 6 can fill in if necessary. And it is likely to be necessary due to injuries, rotation, fatigue, and so on.

If we have a big game and RAN isn't available, the likely solution is to move Gvardiol or Ake to LB. The Sane if Nunes isn't available: we can't play Lewis vs Liverpool or Arsenal or Barcelona at RB, Pep.is more likely to use Stones or Khusanov or Akanji, if the latter stays.

So, 5 of the 6 CBs are good options for FB.

I’d rather offload Ake or Stones (as much as I love him) but it’s easier said than done finding a buyer willing to gamble on players who spend at least half the season in the treatment room.

It would be very unlucky if they all were out for 2-4 months at the same time. In that case we'd either recall Reis and he'd be back up to Khusanov and Gvardiol or we'd have to promote from the academy. Other clubs would be in a similar position if they had 3 CBs out for months at the same time.

As has been stated, we simply cannot have a squad with 6 CBs as that means leaving us short in other areas.

As I edited my post above, it's simplistic to think of the CBs only as CBs. 5 of them can play also at FB, RAN is our only proper FB for now...

We don't need 6 CB. 5 will do as Stones would be the luxury player with his injury record. So 3 pretty reliable in gvardiol, khusanov and Dias then ake and Stones will fill in when required or give Stones enough gaps and time inbetween games to manage him better. Akanji should be sold as he's taking up a foreign spot.

While that may be true, I suspect Nunes, Lewis, RAN and O'Reilly will mainly cover FB positions.

5 CBs should be plenty (barring a huge injury crisis).

Akanji, Ake, and Stones all get injured as often as each other.

That's plainly wrong.

Edit: since the start of the 22/23 season, Akanji has played over 9000 minutes in the PL and the CL.

Stones and Ake have played fewer than 11000 minutes combined (!).

Akanji has played more minutes than any other defender, including Dias.

Stones and Ake are HG. Akanji isn't. Easy choice for me if one of them has to go.
spot on we have enough to let him go we have to start getting the age of the squad down as well he's been a decent player for us but we have 2 c/h on loan that we need to start making room for and there's also mfuni who can play cb lb who i think will get some cup games this season if it all turns to shit we could always play plodri at cb :)
