TV Series

So far I have really enjoyed Alien: Earth, has very much caught the atmosphere of the original film whilst bringing interesting ideas to the table. Alien Romulus was a poorly plotted best of reheated hash, very much the Hollyoaks in space.

This series brings intriguing ideas on what makes a person human, and has some very disturbing takes on the xenos. There are also other extra terrestrial organisms featured, don't let your cat watch..........

Generally the look of the series is a retro futurist one, like the first 3 films, grimy industrial, nihilistic; I think this looks much better in this universe than the gleaming minimalist Prometheus.

The opening episode is strongly reminiscent of the first film's opening, but does serve to flesh out the world building, rather than empty fan service like Romulus.

It is a dark future, with the Solar System divided in the spheres of 5 mega corporations, with people as indentured servants. It's primarily concerning one corporate team Prodigy owned by the youngest trillionaire Boy Kavalier.

A Wetland Yutani research ship has been gathering alien species for 65 years and crash-lands in Prodigy City, New Siam, the race is on to get the cargo, which has ideas of its own......

The first 2 episodes have dropped, another 6 left. So far the series has been fantastic, and just a bit gory! Hope we get a multi series arc, does feel like Easter eggs are being dropped to be explained later on.

Can I ask what's happened to the original Aba452, please?

Without talking too much about the show, for others that haven't seen it, what's really caught my eye is the diametrically opposed situation of 'Wendy' and the 'Lost Boys'. What brings in something new to the 'Alien' world, can be quickly lost, if the writers f'k it up.

So far, so good, but it really is precarious how they treat that aspect. It's the only thing bringing a real draw to the show.

I think the new creatures are interesting they've been specifically created and designed so that their biology is likely to be every bit as gross as the xenos.

Do you remember the "new" Battlestar Galactica, smartly rebooted with well written episodes exploring nuances to the human/cylon conflict. Brilliant and deep, considering the original 70s series was a quick knock off of Star Wars.

The creators think we've done humans v cylons, let's do the origins of the cylons. Sounds a good idea, the series Caprica was duller than a dull thing.

This is the danger, not for Wendy, but for the lost boys, who are a bit irritating so far. It is interesting that the actors on the media tour were Kirsh, chief synth scientist for Prodigy, Boy Kavalier, Wendy a synth with a young girl's memory, Hermit her human brother, Morrow survivor from the crashed ship. The other actors including Ade Edmondson and Essie Davis, have not been highlighted as much. Therefore the first group are playing much more significant characters.

There is still a problem for me in the timeline, this series is set 2 years before Alien, the crashed ship had been collecting specimens for 65 years before this. Yet neither the crew of the Nostromo nor the colonists or marines had even heard of xenomorphs? There is clearly some scary Alien shit going down!!

One thing that I do marvel at is that Alien was calling out corporate greed back in 1979, a biting commentary on consumerism which if anything is even more acute today. The series has taken the next logical step with these mega corporations being more powerful and owning nation states.

I’m really enjoying it, a breath of fresh air after Romulus, which actually was for teenagers “there’s sumfin in tha fookin’ wartaa” !!

if by “for teenagers” you mean topics that will certainly affect them: an Earth controlled by billionaires, the obvious affects of a climate crisis, Tech bros playing god, transhumanism, & AI, then yes!
And there’s plenty of gore & body horror for us who were teenagers in the 80s & never grew up.
Thought it was shite !!

I don't want to comment on all of your post as, again, others may be interested to watch the show. However, yes, I remember the rebooted show. I, may well, watch it again!

I will say, though, your question on Xenomorph knowledge may be explained by the very control you spoke of; corporations. Just remember (well as I recall) both of the original 'Alien' films were very much 'need-to-know' basis of exploration and the theme, as in this TV show, was only the Synthetics were privy to Weyland-Yutani intentions.

As we see today, there's much cover up in things we, as a society, are expected to succumb to, so I don't think it's too much of a leap that Weyland-Yutani control the narrative about any major disasters they're involved with.

'Alien: Earth' ep 3.

I don't know if other posters have written this off really quickly... or whether this was just a really good episode!

Adventurous expansion of the Xenomorph lore that I don't know about but, then again, I've never read any exploratory books on the creatures, so others may know. The show's beginning to move in its own direction and I'm pleasantly surprised with the writing, some of the minor character development and the directing/ pacing. I enjoyed the individual portrayals of the 'Lost Boys' gang, all bringing something different to the show.

I think when the viewer lets go of what's gone before in the films (or what's expected from), this show begins to show signs of life. I'm just hoping it doesn't drop levels from now on.

Series 3 of the 100ft wave. Fantastic programme and for anyone even remotely interested in surfing it’s worth a watch. Series 3 veers away from Nazarre more than previous ones which works really well I think. Brilliant stuff.
