Literacy: That Reading Thing

That Reading Thing is an education site, with training, or for futurer readers aimed at young people who either have given up on reading, risk leaving education or have no formal education. I heard it is ran from prisons, youth offender centres, and so on.

Has anyone used it?
Has anyone done the training?

I'm starting the online course and some face to face sessions. I like the feedback I have from one experienced teacher and one other educator. I like the fact that the introduction starts as: "You don't need to know anything we haven't learned together." Whilst it sounds a tad preachy, it certainly feels like a safe learning environment and course.

I'm a 40 year old literacy mentor and I love learning and finding new ways to get kids (primary or secondary) into reading. Any ideas or things Blue Mooners can share would always be appreciated.

@Gary James and Ian Cheeseman would perhaps be ideal models for future reading sessions, assuming school visits are possible. Can anyone recommend any City or non-City contacts?

I would be happy to support something like this. Some of my favourite talks/sessions I’ve done have been with schools and also with homeless centres where my talks have helped bring a bit of positivity and given people an opportunity to share some positive memories via footballing stories. 'That Reading Thing' sounds like a lesser known spin off, of The Office.

Every September, at the beginning of the school year, I hold a meeting with parents to discuss various bits and bobs. I ask (implore) them to do three things with their children:

It has certainly helped with many pupils who had huge phonics gaps - and helped them engage reading that relates to their interests (fishing, motorbiking etc are the main ones)
