Old Maine Road photos thread

Not exactly and old pic of maine rd but of the p11 bus from town to get there

Interesting. I've got a question about that. There was a long period when I could not go to matches. I was in places abroad, both far (other side of the planet) and nearish (Europe). Also did not have a pot to piss in as a family, and it would have been divorce proceedings and no messing if I'd taken what little we had to see ninety minutes of what was, to my Significant Other, twenty-two men chasing a bag of wind around on a patch of grass for ninety minutes. Anyway, I digress…
When I used to go from the centre of town, it was always from Aytoun St, and it was always a full-size double-decker. When did that change?
Also, it's a different, footling detail — but when did the 92 bus, as I remember it, change to 192? Same run — from Hazel Grove right into town. I used to get off at Longsight, and had a brisk walk down Dickinson Road. Never failed to quicken my pace when I saw those floodlights in the distance. Especially when they were on. Always used to notice the blue plaque on one of the north-side houses on Dickinson Road, saying that Elizabeth Gaskell had lived there.

Incidentally, the “new” Kippax was the monster that got up off Frankenstein's table for me. Apologies to anyone who loved it. For me, that was not the Kippax.
At the time we all pretended it was great. But we all new it was shit. Would have been good if it li key to the rest of the stadium but given the Financial mess at the time we were lucky to get that stand built.

Born Sept 1980. My Dad took me and my brother to our first game in the mid 80s in one of them Watford FA Cup games that had a replay of a replay. I don't remember anything about that game. The first game I remember is when we were at home to Liverpool and got battered 4-0 in 88. Last memorable game I went to there was the 3-1 Goater derby. Always in my heart but Etihad is our home.
We got ran ragged by John Barnes. He demolished us that night. 3-1 to Watford IIRC.

First time I can remember us playing on a Thursday
Was it?
When Graham Taylor was manager of Villa I wrote to him (like you do) and told him about how brilliant Barnes was that night. I also asked if my team would ever win anything or would United carry on winning the lot whilst my team never won a carrot. He wrote me a fantastic reply, agreeing about Barnes and telling me to stick with it as one day my team might win something. Prescient words.

I think so. Could be my FOC memory letting me down though!

Yep

Definitely on a Thursday and 4 games in 8 days (3 at Maine Road)

Presumably some of our earlier Boxing Day games would have fallen on a Thursday, but this felt more like the real deal

Such a downer because I'd been at Vicarage Road the previous Monday for the original replay, and I can still recall the hysteria when we won the coin toss for the second replay venue.

I'm sure it was 0-0 at Half Time and we were holding our own.

Wasn't Nixon at fault for one of the goals?
I seem to recall the ball rolling one circumference over the Platt Lane goal line
