Just seen this video, shows Rayo Vallecano letting their striker go miles offside while 'inactive'. Then they play him in for a good chance as soon as he's onside. Clearly a tactic of theirs.

Seen this happen to us loads of times and it's really difficult to prevent with the way the offside rule works currently - unless you stop playing with such a high defensive line........

Pep seems determined to stick with the high line, but I'd love to know what he thinks of this and how he thinks his defenders should cope with it.

No fucking chance of a move like that with our wide men :)

I'm surprised it hasn't been tried for free kicks toward the wings outside the penalty area. One player feints to take the kick and continues toward the goal line; ball played toward the goal line whilst he is still onside. Meanwhile two attackers standing on the edge of the goal area. As soon as the player who ran to the goal line gets ahead of the players on the edge of the goal area he crosses for them. Meanwhile the defenders have either had to drop deep or are rushing back toward goal.

Clearly seeking to gain an advantage and therefore they are active so no need to change the law. IFAB could issue an instruction thus

Spuds were doing it against us, albeit slightly differently.
All 3 of their forwards were invariably miles ‘offside’ every time the ball was played long towards Trafford. Trafford picks up the ball, flag doesn’t go up and they’re 5 yards outside the box ready for the ‘press’. It looked like they had insane amounts of energy but, in actuality, they were already there. I suspect they might not have been so keen to do that if Eddie had been in goal, given his ability to pass through the press (although he’s not been great at that in 2025).
This is, of course, helped by the obsession with ‘playing on’ and not giving a free kick, in order to keep the game moving.
All that being said, they wouldn’t have been able to do it to the team of 2022/23, as we’d have just run over them. Hopefully we’ll get that back at some point in the near future.

I'm still getting over the fact we bought a goalie when we are screaming out for a right back ;-)

Nothing wrong with the law, it’s absolutely clear. Defenders have to deal with it. If you live by an offside trap you can’t moan when you die by it.
