The Squad planning thread

This appears to be what we will have given the latest news that Eddie and Gundo are leaving.

Goalkeepers
Donnarumma, Trafford, Bettinelli

Defenders
Nunes, Lewis
Stones, Khusanov
Gvardiol, Dias, Ake Akanji
Ait Nouri

Midfielders
Rodri, González, Reijnders, Bernardo, Kovacic, O'Reilly

Wingers/AM
Foden, Cherki,Bobb, Doku, Savinho

Strikers
Haaland, Marmoush

25 Total

17 non home grown

Looks reasonably well balanced.
2 CB too many and 1 CM too many while the central midfield could look better. The moment reijnders AND Rodri are out again we are back to square one.
I’d even say if one of those 2 is injured that we are back to square 1

Damning despite the money spent that Pep says that the centurions team and past teams would batter the current one
We know that and we know it will take a couple of years for this new young squad to reach that level, doesn’t mean we can”t challenge like those teams did before they peaked.
Think most City fans get that I do and am okay with it, looking forward to it . Seems Pep does too.

Think he goes though in two years? I’m concerned that that comment just means he’ll do his best with what Viana gives him and what will be will be? Could be reading it wrong mind but not exactly a rallying call

Is it that damning? They were the centurions, fourmidables, treble winners and 4-in a row champions. Pretty much any iteration at their peak would beat any team in any of the top 5 leagues 2 games in to the season. We have new, young players, learning to gel.

Those teams has footballing unicorns in them. You can’t replace Kev. No matter how much you spend. He was one of a kind and I doubt we’ll see his profile replicated.

And that’s just one player!

You can, if you’re willing to spend enough.

Look at that graphic in another thread where we’ve spent less than bloody Crystal Palace. Fucking rubbish ambition that.

Sooo, it still feels like we are one or two windows away from a complete rebuild.
Considering Viana will start planning and making moves about next summer already today most likely, how would you like to plan next summer?

For me next summer we should see off all of Stones, Ake, Bernardo, Kovacic, Ortega (if he doesn't leave this season)

I'd personally would like to try and get a big fee for Dias assuming he doesn't suddenly have a massive season out of nowhere again. I just don't rate him as a centre-back in the way I'd like us to play

Next summer should also probably be the time to part ways with Nunes and bring in the right-back people want. Again assuming Nunes doesn't actually play himself into contention for staying

Of the newer guys we have bought where the jury is out along with Nunes I think Doku, Gonzales and Marmoush all either need to have big seasons or should be moved on ruthlessly. Savio maybe as well considering the bullshit with Spurs this summer but due to his age and apparent talent I'd personally have patient with him. I wouldn't sell both Marmoush and Doku unless both looks more like they do at their worst than at their best this season, and if both continue their current performances I would keep Marmoush as a squad option and get a fee for Doku. Only way I would keep both is if they both turn into the world-class wide men we need to compete.

Gonzales I can see people want to have patience with, and I hope he kicks on but he is a odd one out of our new signings, I am not sure he would fit the style we are seemingly building or whether there is better options out there when we could go even bigger next year in the market with more of our wage bill getting off the books. I am not sold on his mobility and actual ability but I hope he has a great season

Then the ins:

Right-back; I think we are waiting for Livramento here, and assuming we do what we need to get that done that is a very sensible signing. Will be easier if Newcastle fails to qualify for CL and they have just shown everyone that they sell. If we move Rico into midfield Id'd like us to also go big for Vanderson as the rotation option. Keep an eye on Julian Ryerson as a cheaper alternative

Centre-midfield; I am not sure if we wait for Wharton here, but in my opinion he is someone that we absolutely needs to move for when he is on the market. Getting better and better, genius with the ball at his feet. An english metronome that also suits a style of play that is both possesional and more transitional. 4 big players (Rodri, Reijnders, Wharton, Gonzales) for what I would assume is 2 positions is probably enough with also Nico O'Reilly continuing to make his strides, and also if we can free up Rico to actually try and carve out a squad spot in midfield next season with two new wide right-backs. If Gonzales leave I'd still look for young project like Lamine Camara that wouldn't demand too much assuming we buy Wharton.

A non-hg alternative for Wharton if he comes on the market is Barrios from Atletico. If they have a bad season he could maybe be tempted away and is a possibly world-class player for us that we have to consider making room for

Wingers; for me this is the big one next season. To go with Wharton and Livramento this is the position we need a marquee signing in to provide goals and assists. One if one of Marmoush, Doku or Savio make way, 2 if for whatever reason 2 or more of them gets moved on.

I assume Rodrygo will still be available for those making a push next season as well. But the other two that are in my opinion juat as if not more interesting is Olise (rumoured release clause?) and Bradley Barcola (odd one out in a Galacticos level front-line at PSG, and young)

I would personally go big for Olise, who is also HG all though that probably won't be needed but always welcome. Will be fantastic in this team.

If two widemen leaves (both Doku and Marmoush) I'd look at facilitating Barcola as well, or keep an eye on Antonio Nusa this season.

IF WE SELL; I think we are set at CB for at least a season even if Akanji, Stones and Ake leaves for good. If Khus and Gvardiol knock on as we want, and Dias gets kept on as I assume I'd personally like us to give both Reis and Bah a chance in the senior squad as options if they perform acceptable in their loan moves. If Gvardiol gravitates more towards the left-back position or if Dias decline ends up with us parting ways for a good fee I think we should look for a left-sided centre-back with pace and power. Not in the same unoroven category as our 3 young options. Van De Ven is the dream but probably an impossible task. Diomande from Sporting? But I think Dias will be kept on, and hopefully be back to his best

I want us to look something like this next season, and this is when I will start expecting an assault on the league title again:

______________Donna (Traff)
Livra _______Khus __Dias___Gvardiol(Nouri)
___________ Rodri____Reij
______Olise____Foden____Savio (Marmoush)
________________Haaland (Marmoush)

With Bah, Reis, Vanderson, Nico x2, Wharton, Cherki and Bobb trying to break into the side

Don't think it would be Livramento and Vanderon, add Echeverri too maybe but don't think you'll be far off.

Get onto Saliba's agent now, he'll be going to the last year of his contract next Summer.

We have plenty of numbers there, but I think we need an absolute top class centre-back to get back to the elite level.

Strange transfer window.

Keeper situation makes little sense
No right back
Kev gone but keep other players
Akanji gone yet we need defenders
No real pressure on Haaland position

Signed a lot of players with potential but with no spine in the team it’s going to take time to settle.

Feels like the club have written off last season & this & preparing for life after pep.

The fact 3 games in & no no 1 keeper is mental for a club like city

Still not quite over the fact that we have one proper recognised full back in the entire squad. How on earth has it come to this? I said in an earlier post I would of gone for the Leicester right back Pereira despite his injury record as some kind of stop gap until we find somebody but square pegs in round holes again it is. Also cutting off our nose to spite our face with Savinho and Spurs was an odd move.

I understand football goes in cycles and ours may well be coming to an end but at least give yourself a chance.

Strangest transfer window i have ever witnessed.

So um 4 goalkeepers in the squad who have all been number 1s before in their career and only 1 full back hahaha what a rebuild

We do have a number 1 keeper, and a very strong second keeper to push him,Kev went because his contract was up the players we kept had contracts no mystery there.
