47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

It's just frustration causing people to say all sorts.

The frustration coming from the fact he's ridiculously gifted and we are not getting to see it.

All the talk of other teams signing these excellent players yet we arguably have a better one right under our noses, one that came through our Academy, but we can't seem to get a decent game from him at the moment and haven't for a year now.

If he wasn't so good, this thread wouldn't be a mess.

I've watched City for decades but latterly the frustration doesn't half get to me! Never used to, but once you become accustomed to being the best team on the planet the merest slip doesn't half chafe! I should know better 'cos I've watched much worse than a 2-1 to Brighton.

Christ, I don't often read these threads, but this one is particularly bad. A bit like the Guardiola one in that it's just a small group of moaners repeating the same bollocks, only I guess because Phil is a local lad there's a lot more vitriol. He's injured. He's been carrying an ankle injury for a while. He had finally gotten fit but the tackle from Van de Ven in the Spurs game re-injured it. It's really not controversial and doesn't require conspiracy theories akin to QAnon.

It's worth remembering that everyone from Khaldoon to Soriano to Pep himself see Phil as the reference point for the entire CFA. All the kids who are coming through who dream of playing at City are pointed in the direction of Phil's journey.

He was looking really sharp before that tackle and you could see him limping heavily after it. Had a moment of incredible footwork, was bursting into space and was really trying to drag us back into the game. A spark we need and it's typical that he gets hurt right where his long-term injury has been and Cherki is also out starving us of that individual quality and creativity we often need.

The reports out of preseason have been that he's got his smile back. Last season was really difficult for everyone in the squad, and in particular for him because it's the first time he's had that many little injuries throughout a season. The good thing is that like Pep has said quite a few times, he needs very little training to get back to full fitness. Hopefully the international break can give him time to deal with the ankle. We're going to need him in particular with Cherki's injury.

I’ve only ever just read on here, but I’m currently working on Phill’s new house and was speaking to him extremely nice lad and he was just saying he’s constantly getting injury’s with his ankle even shown the scars , and all he wants to do is play football.

I used to wash Neil Armstrong's windows, he was down to earth too.

Cheers mate. Tallies with what a lot of people have said recently. He'll be back soon enough. I bet the new gaff is something else :)

yeah it is he can fish from his kitchen if he wanted to ! But yeah as others have said last year was the first time he’s been in the position of not winning along with injury’s and form not what we was used to but I’m sure he will be back. He wants to win and get back to his best plus few other things he’s mentioned I truly believe it was just a bad season that all players have last year he’s extremely honest with his assessment on the team last year !

Did he give any idea when he'd be back from injury mate? Hoping he'll be available for the derby!

Nice one, thanks mate.

I really do hope he has an injury free season, Phil is the key to City, he’s the player our team will be built around for the next 8 years hopefully.

That doesn't sound good though if he keeps getting injuries on the same ankle

I’ve had the same injury occurring to my ankle from football for 3 years now, saying that though, I’m relying on the NHS.

Fingers crossed he can sort it out, doesn’t help that he gets absolutely whacked every time he plays and the refs do fuck all.

iFoden doesn't have the passing, vision or through balls to be an effective 10. I sometimes questionk his decision making to dominate from that position too.

His most successful period a couple of years ago, he wasn't really dominating but consistently contributed in the final third.
That's because he was following the managers Tactical orders.

If you don't do that ,you are dropped.its a no brainer.

Imo..a fully fit and committed Phil Foden could walk into any team on the planet and flourish in the so called No .10 role. I truly believe he has the ability to do this from what I've seen with my own eyes.He does have high level passing ability,he really does, but Pep has picked him in positions where it's hard to show his full range of passing..or to augment / blend in with other highly talented midfielders...his role isn't to dominate..it's to finish off in the attacking third.

But let's be quite clear here.Foden spent ,I imagine the whole of his youth team career dominating midfield showing his two footed ability and skills from central midfield. He was always a class above his youth peers.
But...that natural ability and skill ,rightly or wrongly.....is restricted,.for he is told to follow the game plan..and who can really argue with Pep and what those heavy regimented tactics have won ?

Just about every trophy in the top class game.

When I look back at my favourite central midfield game changers over the years( not the wide playing mazy dribbling talented wingers) I see Liam Brady at Arsenal whose control and composure was David Silva like.augmented by hard running tough tackling midfielders around him
It worked....

I look at Michel Platini for France at the top of his game given licence to get on the ball in central areas and naturally...cruise through centre mid, bringing life to the team,Tigana neatly dovetailing with almost equal silky skills, but a more industrious athletic work rate- it worked

Look at Eyal and Benarbia ...two incredibly gifted footballers who terrorized oppentemts with their flair and natural ability, leaving others to do the tracking and marking of the opposition

I digress

Return to the modern game....Phil has to fit into incredibly strict guidelines set by Pep..if he doesn't
He is not selected. So we just don't see the full range of his passing ability as others, not least Ederson, for one,.. have had that responsibility..Phil has been instructed to score goals and finish moves ..the exact opposite of Jack Grealish at City?

Let's see how Donna Summer s arrival affects our central midfield players passing range ,,lol.

I've argued myself into a mess here but I hope someone can see my train of thought : )

Fit and confident Phil Foden is a game changer for us. Got it all and time is also on his side. Would love to see him as a focal point in the side - centrally - with Rodri and Reijnders supporting him.
