Scott Sinclair Mark II. Needs to be filed in an unnecessary homegrown purchase thread.
 
I still can't believe how bad a signing he's been. He was a regular for Leeds and England when we bought him and for the price he appeared to be a bargain , a great squad player with potential to improve further. How wrong we were.

To me he always looked a second touch was a tackle type.. better in a handful of england games but not a city midfielder when we were in our pomp

Best Pep can use him for right now is some kind of NDJ enforcer, That role doesn't require too much football IQ, just chop the opponent far away from the box, break down their play, a few shirt pulls here and there, some beefy crunchy tackles to remind them that we are not a Spanish team despite having a Spanish Catalan manager.

If we had the NDJ/Gattuso "mad man" type of player in the game against Brighton, they would have had second thoughts about kicking us all over the pitch like they did, you kick Rodri, we take out Mitoma and Minteh, see how you like it.

I know there's a fat or lazy joke somewhere in there :) but the thing is this, with that role you really don't need to cover much ground as they would come to you. NDJ didn't cover much ground himself, he wasn't much of a runner, he just mounted his post like a royal guard and if you think he's a dead alligator then take a few steps closer, It's the perfect fuck around and find out role for a lazy player.
 
Could be one of Pep’s greatest achievements if he could resurrect a career for KP. He did have ability when he joined to say he was always crap seems unfair. Phillips seems a bit like Calvert-Lewin to me. Are the issues what’s happening in his head.

I think the injury he sustained before joining city in addition to probably the mental toll of being called a fat bastard by his manager in public and being unable to string together a run of decent performances in three years.

I blame his choice of footwear. Career at City would have turned out Ok had he gone out in some Bata sandals!

To be fair, he had one good season for Leeds in the Premier League, his second season in the league was them was fairly poor and with injuries too. The rest of his career was in the Championship.

Loads of players have had a good season in the premier League once. Patrick Bamford was good that season, where's he now?

The fact he was ever starting in midfield for England shows how light England were in that position.

That's not to say he didn't have potential but also maybe he is just a second division player who managed a good season in the top level, just like the aforementioned Bamford.

No he was decent for England. As you say the bar there isn't high but he showed enough that he could play an holding role for us to give Rodri a rest here and there.

He went missing in the semi and final in that euros where he was decent.

I actually remember saying during the final that Rice seemed to be doing his and Phillips job at the same time when Italy started getting on top.

Either way, I don't think he's a bad player per se, I just don't think he's Man City material and I think Pep worked that out extremely quickly once he trained with the team.

He may have been able to carve out a decent career at a mid table club had he joined them from leeds but he joined a club he's not good enough to play for and has probably regressed due to very limited game time.

We may never know how good he could be but it's certainly not being a player that features a fair bit for a team winning the big trophies.
