It’s funny how much of the direction of travel Orwell predicted right, but wrong in terms of the detail.

He envisioned the surveillance society, without (understandably) predicting the fact that most of the means of surveillance would lie in the hands of private citizens, not the state.

And he also predicted the way that ministries would be labelled in a way to project a particular message, but rather than the Ministry of Peace in a time of perpetual (and full) war, instead the Department of War in a country that is ostensibly not fighting one, although the reality below the surface is somewhat different.

The Gulf of America is from the same pitiful, insecure playbook.

One thing Orwell absolutely called 100% correct, however, was the corrupting, corrosive impact that power has on the human soul, and how once people have huge power it consumes them to the extent that any sense of humanity disappears and the main focus becomes holding on to that power rather than what is in the best interests of the people over which they rule.

It’s hugely depressing.

At least in the UK we still have checks and balances to prevent the abuse of power, or have I got that wrong?

It consumes them so much that those in power openly discuss longevity.
 
I remember the First Gulf War in 1991. The yanks had the best radio station out there and we used to tune into it…the music was like Vietnam revisited…as if this was just a continuation so they could say they won…

It’s particularly strange given the narrative that the U.S. should pursue staunch isolationism and stay out of the affairs of other nations.

Of course, as we all know, that wasn’t actually ever really the policy. Take Ukraine. The “policy” was just to take what Democrats and “RINOs” and “the deep state” and “intellectuals” had been doing and recommending and do the opposite. And of course everyone in the cult went along with it. As they will this.

Once you’ve succumbed intellectually and morally to Trump, there is no policy he advocates that will prevent you from supporting him; no rationaliz(s)ation that is a bridge too far.

I don't think any religion which acknowledges the existence or rights of others in any way is aligned with him. For me, you can really boil him down to what he did long ago -- provably so -- stiffing contractor after contractor and bank after bank, regardless of the impact on individuals or institutions.
