The Labour Government

If Starmer goes the favourites for next Labour leader are in order of Betfair Betting, Streeting, Burnham, Jones, Mahmood, Rayner, Cooper, Lammy, Reeves, Phillipson. Everyone else is 65/1 plus. Tories have all the usual names. Reform look to be in the position of the SNP once Sturgeon left, fucked. I've seen the new Greens leader interviewed, absolute tool. Lib Dems have Daisy Cooper nailed on to be their next leader.

There is no one in that lot who will get anywhere near uniting the country.

There never will be, society is completely divided.

Seems like the adults in the room are not much different, equally capable of sleaze and dishonesty and fall like chess pieces in the exact same way the last lot did as they lurch from one crisis to the next.

Until he opens a VIP lane and diddles £38B from the public purse or attempts to crash the economy like Truss, I’ll stick with him. Thanks.
That’s true. I don’t think they’re doing themselves too many favours at the moment though. I always felt Starmer didn’t have to do too much to win the last election, and it was as much to do with the Tories imploding as anything else but once he got in I expected Labour to be sensible and stable with not too many sleaze stories along the way. There have been too many of the latter and their handling of the WFA and the welfare bill was very poor, leading to the kind of u-turns I mocked Johnson for. It also highlighted that having a huge majority isn’t always a good thing.

The one thing in their favour for me is that I feel a Reform government will be far worse for most of the country. It’s just a shame that the Tories have gotten rid of most of their sensible politicians because a credible opposition - be it Labour, Tory, or whoever - is a good thing.

This whole Mandelson affair sounds similar to the Louise Haigh situation... Starmer fully aware of someone's dodgy past, uses his consistently piss poor judgement and gives them a senior role anyway. Only to have to sack them later when there's a media shit storm.

As a reminder, Louise Haigh disclosed her historic conviction for fraud during her vetting process, so it was deemed OK until the media found out about it.

Do you think he wants to survive it?

Watching him at PMQs yesterday he seemed to be going through the motions- he’d obviously placed himself in a terrible position, but it was difficult to detect any real conviction in what he was saying or indeed any real determination to stand up to what Badenoch was saying to him.

He’s rarely seen in the UK, he doesn’t appear keen to have any real domestic visibility and he only really appears to enjoy it when he’s out of the country working on matters that aren’t really party political.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he walks at some point in the next few months.
Given the dearth of talent around him - some of whom are downright fruit loops or outright dangerous - I'm mindful of the expression, "careful what you wish for". I could find myself being a Keith supporter!

I would think that this has been tabled now because of this government's policy to get disabled people into work. If they can't even be bothered to ensure people can afford to get to their job, it implies that they don't actually care about the people they will force to find employment.

It would have been another easy win for them if they had allowed this.
Easy wins that don't cost a great deal of money in the grand scheme of things. Like the Tories with free school dinners - if they'd agreed to it at the start then it would've gained them lots of positive publicity

This decision will end up being challenged in the courts, for instance my mother's blue badge allows her to park the car in council carparks foc at any time.

She lied to the police about her phone being nicked! Seems that within the hallowed committee rooms of Westminster lying is fine, as long as it remains between themselves.

There should be no return to government if you’re sacked or forced to resign, we want clean politicians in charge of our taxation.
How many people are re-employed in the workplace after dismissal? virtually none.

This echoes my thoughts. Piss off and don't come back. Mandelson oozes sleaze and needs dispatching never to return. As for Starmer, what an absolute joke of a "supposed" leader.

I've just read a report that says Labour MPs are despondent!!!

I'd like to tell the Labour MPs that they are not the only ones who are despondent! I had such high hopes after 14 years of Tory misrule and now I'm worried. I'm worried that too many people seem to be listening and believing the Mirage that is Farage and Reform.

Ah well. Thank goodness we've got Sunday to look forward to. :-)

I would certainly agree with you on that, although we can live in hope that the gilt market would act to prevent the worst of outcomes should Starmer be on his way in the not too distant.

You only have to look at how yields reacted to Reeves’ little episode in the Commons a few weeks ago to see how fearful the market is about some of the potential successors to Starmer, although these risks have arguably subsided a little now with Rayner being out of the picture.

I think the market broadly tolerates Starmer and Reeves, albeit at a price, because the pair of them are so confused and muddled in their thinking that it’s doubtful how much serious damage they can really inflict before they get booted out in a few years. They’re unlikely to ever come up with a truly radical plan that would break the current orthodoxy and stick to it, because they ultimately they lack the necessary skills and conviction to do so.

If however they were replaced with someone possessing a clear view of what they want to achieve, and the willingness to push it through, then that could be a different proposition and a different reaction from the market would probably be forthcoming.

I have to say though that if Mandelson really did fail his vetting by MI6 as is being speculated, and Starmer still chose to appoint him, then I would think that Starmer is in some considerable trouble. Also, you wouldn’t really want a vengeful Peter Mandelson working against you. Could be an interesting few months ahead.
