Never come across a genuine free speech advocate. Invariably, what they mean is they want the freedom to say the n-word and so on without restraint. They don't want to listen to what left-wingers have to say at all. In fact, they want to shut them up, because they believe everyone bar a tiny minority of 'Marxists' is really a suppressed racist twat like they are.

You can put me down in that column as well. It’s a ridiculous law and it’s not absolute in the US anyway. There’s over half a dozen provisions for speech that’s not protected by 1A.

Feel free to label yourself any way you see fit, but don’t try to stretch the very limited 1A exceptions to fit this narrative, and, while I believe some speech is abhorrent, I trust people to see that, recognize it, and reject it, not be thrown in jail for it!

I’m a free speech advocate. Then again, I don’t find the need to say such words that you mention.

While standing at the top of that slope, Americans can almost see Britons, as they slide ever further down, shouting “Wheeeee!” as they go!

Ours is a vain and pathetic attempt at encircling the right of all people to speak freely, and perform a dictatorial squeeze. It enrages us.

Yours? Applauded by ever increasing factions, depending on what speech is being curtailed to stop other factions from saying certain things they don’t like. Depending upon successive governments to decide which speech is an exercise in self destruction.

What are “bad words” and who gets to decide in 2025? 2027? 2030? I’d venture much of the discussion on here might be at risk if some people get their way. In fact, we regularly have threads closed and posters banned for “words.” I don’t think we should, in Britain or America.

Why make this Britain vs America when every western country has conditioned free speech laws.

It’s the USA vs the entire world and as usual the Americans like to pretend they’ve fixed something that’s not broken while the rest of us ignore you and don’t buy into the idea that the legal right to racially abuse someone makes you exceptional.

FYI, I’M not “America,” and the Constitution isn’t now, nor was it ever intended, to fix something that Brits might have thought was broken.

America was created by people who left Europe for a new world where they would be able to have the faith they wanted and not be jailed or killed for speaking their mind. The power of the people was a complete rejection of the monarchy, and the ability for the man on the street to have a voice was fundamental to that.

You’re smart enough to know two things:

1) There is nothing exceptional about racial abuse, nor has anyone ever claimed it.

2) With freedom comes responsibility to exercise it in good taste.

Are you in favor of legislating good taste or would you prefer the population to reject the bad taste of the day?
