United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Normally I might agree but I absolutely loved the way we went about it today. I don't believe Pep was overly concerned with possession today. With the Donnarumma wall set up we weren't going to concede and simply relied on the fact that we have far too much offensive talent to contain if given space. Let's not kid ourselves. Should have been 5 nil.
It's crazy. Teams went to the low block because trying to outscore us was suicide. So they more or less opted for a slow death. Suddenly one, then two, then everyone decided to press us and go at us with speed. I believe we were somewhat stunned. Instead of blowing their doors off we kept trying to play more and more ball possession at a slower and slower pace. This has played right into the hands of a whole variety of inferior teams. Injuries have not helped. Today we just shut down any counter play and attacked with pace whenever possible. We need to restore some order and unleashing Foden and Doku in space and Haaland in behind is the way to do so. That slow tapping it around the back forever was doing us no favors. Pausing and ignoring runners became too commonplace. I'm praying this gives Pep the impetus to get back to our explosive best forcing these teams to reap what they sow.
Its funny I was just telling a mate that the roles sort of reversed from when we used to get countered time and again by the Rags (the Demichelis game comes to mind). It seemed like we were setup more to counter and the Rags had no choice but to play slow possession football with low output.

I hope I live to regret these words and he proves us all wrong, but we could have squeezed 70 or 80 fucking mil out of spurs ffs
They only offered £53m, all the rest was journo talk.

Great fun that. We were nowhere near our best yet still cantered home to illustrate how absolutely shite that lot are - lovely.

Haaland, Foden and Doku shone. Khusanov and O'Reilly also did well, and the new Keeper made the big save when required. Phil is our X Factor player - we will go as far as he takes us now, he adds the magic dust in the final third.

Thought Rodri played like he had someone else's boots on and was frankly awful. Reijnders again well under par - he always seems rushed and unaware of what's around him - and Bernardo rather weak but it didn't matter. We are a ways away from where we've been in the recent past yet still a million miles ahead of that pile of shite. Blessed be the silence from their fanbase as they realise they've gone down another blind alley.

I agree with all your points but once Savinho & Gonzalez came on I realised Rodri & Bernie must have been better than I’d given them credit for.

He isn’t wrong. At HT we were ahead in the possession by 10% and in the end we ended 10% down. If this is the tactic doing forward then fine, but the drop off is tangible
In Pep’s BBC post-match interview shown on MOTD last night, Pep said that this wasn’t by design and he doesn’t want us playing like that.

Just looking at the bigger picture.

We spent most of that 2nd half camped in our box unable to get out aimlessly punting the ball upfield. At home. To an absolutely shite United side.

The drop off from where we were 3 years ago is staggering.
Just had a glance at ur last dozen or so posts. Quite a negative outlook on life eh?
Are you the old guy in the corner on Early Doors

It feels like the second half attitude was basically we’ll sit back and let’s see what United can muster when they have to build up with slow possession and all they did was spam switches to either wing back and cross. The defence was solid and just enabled us to pick them apart on the break. It was nice to see us do that to teams for once

Hopefully we see Kiushinov get a run at right back from now on. Really good at putting out fires yesterday.

The way we set up sitting in and not trying to dominate them with possession completely nullified their tactic to try and hit us on the break. Instead we did it to them, Haaland is always at his best when he is powering into space and he had it in abundance yesterday. The United back line past the half way line whilst Haaland took the ball with a free run at the keeper was delightful to watch.

Big shout to Doku who was constantly causing United trouble as well. I hope everyone has fun today in work making rags cry. Show them no mercy.

Some of the comments on here are genuinely hilarious, for the last 2 weeks from some people all i have seen is pep has been found out, his way of playing isnt working anymore, we need to evolve etc etc, so yesterday we play a different way and win and now people are complaining that we didnt have enough possession, we let them attack us etc etc, basically you want everything different but to also be the same.

Great win and a positive push in confidence for the next couple of games. Always feels great to beat the rags, has been-is-will be.

Some of the comments on here are raising my eyebrows. Ah well if you can’t celebrate and rather think you know better than Pep, whatever.
Agreed Some like to nit pick on here
Never Satisfied
Imo we won an important victory and in the Circumstances we will take it
COYB!

Some of them have been. But others have been spot on, pointing out that the strategy of possession, possession, possession doesn't really work anymore. The game has gotten faster. And this is the first game, at least in my opinion, that we have found another gear. If what Pep said is true that this wasn't by design, then perhaps that needs a rethink because I like what I saw today. Yes, its United. But at least we had a transition goal today. And probably should of had two with the press we put on.

When we have a lead, we can deploy our possession game. But when the game is still to be had, then I don't think there's anything wrong with being more direct and playing faster. And, yes, this team is evolving. I see nothing wrong with that.

Great post OB. TBF I was one of those who was concerned our tactical stubbornness, newness of personnel and rust would get us a draw today and that’s what I predicted. But . . . I was super-encouraged by EH’s pre-match bluntness about needing to play better which fired me up too. The whole team took putting a quality performance in an important match (for the fans especially) seriously, and their lap around the ground afterwards also showed how much they appreciated the home support (which was excellent to my eyes and ears from 5,500 miles away) despite a lot of our pre-match worry and disappointment with the two losses.

I don’t expect a win vs Arsenal but I wouldn’t even were we 4-0-0 with a GD of +16 — it’s a brutal fixture (I know Napoli is first). But the confidence lift in the players and how galvaniz(s)ed they were today gives me as a fan a ton of encouragement that we’ll put in an intense, entertaining performance whatever the outcome.

Me too.

Only concern was we allowed them to get into areas, with time, that a better team than that shite would have delivered a better ball or shot. However, they didn't and perhaps that was written in.
