Thoughts on the start to the season? | October thoughts (p12)

I think top 5 is gona be nailed on but don’t think we will have enough to challenge Liverpool and Arsenal this season. 3rd or 4th will be a good transitional season, hopefully a fa cup or CL trophy! But fully expect us to be up there again next season. We are deffo building something

Ignoring all the waffle from outsiders and so called experts and pundits I think the club decided to sacrifice a season or two in return for becoming the first ever club to win 4 in a row. Let me explain. Always in our case and never for other title winners have I heard the words uttered after their first title win you have to go and win it again to prove you really are a great team. Of course it was all said to increase the pressure on us. When we won it twice, the narrative changed to could we win a treble, anything to deflect from a second successive title win. Then after that momentous Istanbul night the question arose was it really a better treble than the rags? So the accolades that should have followed each title win have in my opinion never been fully appreciated and we've never been afforded a complete blanket press coverage of our achievements.

After the third title win we were faced with the unknown question could a club win a 4th Premiership title on the bounce. This was our Everest moment without a Sherpa for guidance and at this point I think a lot of us thought the team might start to be dissolved, players sold on and new ones brought in. Younger legs, hungry for success to go again in a season or two, and to be honest it was more expected and nobody would have questioned it. However City turned that thought process on its head and by and large went again. I spoke to a player at the start of that 4th title season and he told me the players had come back and wanted to do it again, they had the drive and the hunger but it was understandably more difficult both mentally and physically.

We did the unthinkable, they became legends, the club broke all the previous records, we did something that had never been done, ever in 135 years of English Football since the first ever title win and yet still they have tried to tarnish us with 115 charges etc. So whilst we have had our battles on the pitch we have been fighting every bit as hard off it and I personally think its been an incredible achievement by everyone at the club over those 4 title winning years that will remain unsurpassed. Imagine the rags or the scousers doing similar.

Which brings me to now. We will never know if the players were available we wanted at the time but the decision to go for the 4th title with the same set of players with just about having enough gas left in the tank, has impacted us harder in the short term. Instead of a more fluid changeover and integration of new players we are now left with a bigger and more noticeable impact over a shorter period. Too many old players gone at once and too many new players easing their way into Peps pattern of play. There were Peps personal issues to add to the mix and last year we really were burnt out no doubt about it so the transition really only starts now. But would anyone of us had done it differently after that incredible 4 in a row?

We've had a mixed start over the 5 games so far but there are plenty of great signs for the future. The whole defence and their back slapping of every block reminds me of how we were a few seasons ago. And you build success on your defence. We have been hit by a number of injuries so the squad over the last 3 games has performed beyond expectations for me. Noteable performances from some players that were questioned last season and today showed the spirit of the camp is unquestioned. I'll take a top 4 spot and anything in the cups and when I look at the new North stand and the hotel im comforted by the fact that this club doesn't stand still on or off the pitch and are building for the future and for continued success. Let's enjoy the ride!
Great summary of the 4 in a row. But I think we won that title because in the end we were the only contenders with the bottle and the knowhow of winning a title. utd had a couple in their PL title wins that were like that. If we'd been serious contenders last season then Liverpool probably would have bottled it again.

Last season our squad had burn out after going Above and Beyond for Four in a Row and the Treble .Pep has raked over the embers and is making a new fire . This season we are begining to smoulder . Should be hot for the run in .

We've improved but not the finished article. I'm hoping (and hopefully) that we could get about 86 points this season - some years that could win the title, and we could, if Liverpool get a few injuries and Arsenal misplaced their bottle again.

So that's 15 extra points needed from last season. So far - Wolves, Brighton and Spurs got us the same outcomes as last season, but we've gained 4 points from the games v Arsenal and united. That's a decent start and gives us a chance.

And as ever with us, if we're in touch still by mid-Feb then I wouldn't bet against us.

Some random thoughts:

Doku looks a lot better and that he's going to have more of an impact and better numbers.

We're set up to play to Haaland's strengths more which is wise as he's the undoubted world class player in our team. He looks at a different level already this season.

Donnarumma is going to be brilliant. OK he shouldn't have rushed out yesterday for that equalizer, but how he dealt with corners and crosses all game was brilliant. I don't think Eddy would have been as confident.

Khusanov at right back is ace.

O'Reilly at left back is ace.

Foden is back.

Rodri is still quite rusty and it'll be a while before we see him at his best.

Reijnders is a bit of a rough diamond I feel. Has loads of ability but does sloppy things.

Pep seems calmer when we don't win and I think thats a sign that this is a two year project to build this team.

I think we'll comfortably get top 4

We are cooking something. I'm not entirely sure what it is, but given the number of changes the squad has gone through I'm happy enough with where we are. I do think when this squad takes off properly it really will take off.

I think most City fans are happy enough to not win a league every year if it's obvious that we are moving in the right direction. I think both the club and Pep have addressed the serious flaws from last season. We are playing with a very young team and obviously trying to learn multiple systems for a variety of games. I hope it takes off in time for the latter stages of the CL, but don't mind it being next season if that's what it takes.

I'm personally not given up on the league. I'm not impressed with either Arsenal or Liverpool, and think if we can put 10 games back to back we can still win it, and I simply wouldn't put that past Pep, but I can be chill.

Too early in the season to be critical. Looks like we have a decent goalie who would have stopped the one goal one attack teams who frequented the Etihad in seasons past. Haaland looks sharp and has made a good start to the season. Pep has started being a bit more pragmatic, 33% possession against Arsenal tells you that. It also tells you we have a totally different team from the teams of the past that dominated possession home and away year in year out.

Arsenal are also a side at their peak on which hundreds of millions have been lavished and yet they couldn't beat a City side who are in the early stages of rebuilding.

I think most of us know where we are.
We are not title-challengers this season, for well-discussed reasons.
This year is about progression, and we are seeing some green shoots.
We have some SERIOUSLY talented young players.
The thing I am wondering is if we could somehow be good enough to nick a Champions League by the end of the season. Food for thought

Cap doffed. Excellent summary. X

All things considered (CWC, fatigue, injuries, our really dodgy back line last season), I'm over the fucking moon.
I am too now, especially after yesterday. I admit two weeks ago, I felt very low about it all, but this last week, the team togetherness and constantly having to overcome adversity with countless injuries and biased beyond belief officiating against us (definitely in the PL) we seem to be heading in the right direction.

I love the league Cup BTW but for once I would forgive Pep for sacking it off.

The next 5 games will tell us more as these are the games we should be winning. Our first 5 games have been average.
