I know it’s been mentioned many times already, but here really was no excuse for the rags to lose by any score, let alone 5-1, to us back in '89, considering the cost of the respective squads, the fact that we were a newly promoted team, the years of experience in the rags' team, compared to our XI, which included five, still young, graduates from our youth policy, the pisscan's years of experience in managing, in contrast to Mel Machin, who was in his first job as a manager / head coach.

But the lads played out of their skins that day, and you could see how much it meant to them, especially Paul Lake, who had a fantastic game and was MotM.

A brilliant day all round.

Brilliant performance.

I’d forgotten about Paddy Roach, one of a long line of dodgy rags goalkeepers.

Stepney, Bailey, Bartez, and right up to date with Onana.

I’m not convinced that Bayindir is any better, though obviously, we haven’t seen him of him yet.

Ha ha yes ...Paddy Roach ....remember growing up taking the piss out of the one rag me and my friends grew up with .......playing football regular on the estate if anyone let in an easy goal youd always hear someone pipe up "even paddy roach woudve saved that " cue laughter

I'm shocked outraged and amazed that Massimo taibi has been left off this list of legerdemain.

To say nothing of Slippery Jim Leighton!

Standards, Vienna, standards ;-)))

The buses refused to go to Maine Road that night as there had been some mither on the buses after the 2-2 in the league a couple of months before.

We walked all the way there from Ordsall - seemed to take ages to get there.
Hardly noticed the walk back!

I had just turned 11 in the October, think it was Mansfield in the next round and they at least managed two against us!

I knew there were others, I just couldn’t think of them off the top of my head, and I didn’t want to go soiling myself by trawling through rags pages to find them.

Don't forget Roy Carroll, I still get mad thinking about that Pedro Mendes shot which crossed the line.

36 years ago. I remember it, like it was yesterday.

Where has the time gone?
What a day, remember being outside the Sherwood before the game. Thankfully I didnt get embroiled in the North Stand trouble as I was in the Kippax that day. The few minutes break changed the whole dynamic of the game, the rest is history.
Heywood town centre was like a scene out of Apocalypse Now later that night.

I did the reverse . Gave my Kippax season ticket to a friend and sat in the North Stand as I was thirty six weeks pregnant . Thought it would be safer .....an absolutely fantastic day which turned out to be my last live game for quite a while as family and work demands took over for a couple of decades. Husband and children carried the flame and I was able to come back once work got less busy .

Lake was sublime, playing wide left midfield, his weaker side,up against experienced ex forest and England international right back Viv Anderson..... Anderson is probably still having nightmares about that game ...utterly destroyed.

Just turned 18 and never seen us beat them live. What a night to follow in town.
