Washing Machines repairs gamble.

I've got a nice 3 year old Hisense washer, but the drum had started to make a grinding noise on spinning. The bearings!
So I called some repair companies. The most reasonable was Pacifica...£170 all in, including costs labour and callout. Not including new drums, though. I told the guy on the phone what the problem was, and he told me if they can't fix it, I get refunded 80 quid. The engineer has just been...he took one look and said it needs a new drum..and they don't do them. So i lose £90 for fuck all. Fucking brilliant.
Now I need a new washer. No thrills...no special washes...just a basic washer that will last.
 
Similar story with us and a Samsung washer. Bearings almost gone after 3 years.

I rang a local repair man and he was really helpful. He didn’t even come round and charge me. He just said the 1500rpm spin washers these days don’t last.

He said to me that the Samsung should work on 800rpm and it has to be fair for 10 months now.

Next washer I get, I won’t use the highest spin settings.

I just want a washer that doesn't have all the extra shite on it and lasts for more that a few years. A wash and a normal spin.
 
We have a 15 y/o LG that works like it did on day one except the display is gone that tells you how much time is left (not something I give a shit about).

When we reno'd the house we put in all new Samsung appliances, fridge, microwave/hood fan and stove.

The fridge lasted about three years before it went to the tip, the microwave/range hood fell apart and doesn't vent properly and the one burner on the stove barely works.

Samsung can fuck off.
 
Just given my late mother-in-law's Bosch Classic away to a local charity (BHF wouldn't take it because it didn't have a plug - it was hard wired!) Bought it when we bought ours 10 years ago - used weekly no problems/repairs with either.
 
We have a Miele that is 12 years old. It has had various issues but we have a very good local appliance repair set up. No repair/ no fee. If they do repair it it’s £80 + parts. Also give you a 6 month guarantee on the appliance so if anything else goes wrong you just pay for parts.
 
I have a colleague that used to work for Samsung and he says all their white goods are for pure cunts. Recommends giving everything except some of their phones a wide berth.
 
Bloody hell, I’m a woman and I thought I’d clicked on Mumsnet not Bluemoon:) My washer is a Bosch, I use the same cycle for my washing even though it has lots of different ones. I don’t think the washer is a good as the AEG I had before and I had that a fair few years.
 
Never had a problem with my Bosch appliances. They're a giant in the white goods world and sit under the larger umbrella of Siemens, so either of them I'd recommend. There's a load of obsolescence built into machines which is ethically a bit shit, but why make something that lasts 20yrs when you can sell five in that time? It's just the way it is I'm afraid and the mantra buy cheap/buy twice is strong in this sector.

Not sure that helps anyone make a decision though!

The last Bosch I had the motor went. On previous washers it was just a case of replacing the motor brushes that I could do myself for £30 ish. In their wisdom they removed that possibility and designed it so the whole bloody motor needed changing at many times the price and the part needed importing from America for some reason, I assume they want everyone to buy expensive warranties.

I lost confidence in Bosch as a result.

It’s getting to the point where no brand is that reliable, so you might as well buy as cheap as possible, within reason.
 
Basic Bosch second hand all the way . I'm on my second . No problem . Just watch it break down tomorrow ....if you've got space a stand alone spinner is good for the heavy work . My mother in law gave me one years ago and it was invaluable for all the terry nappies .

I couldn’t even get someone independent to fix it. Bosch were seemingly keeping spares to themselves so they could charge the £125 callout or whatever it was, on top of the part.

Funny actually, I have a power drill and garden strimmer of theirs which are a bit temperamental too. I should have returned them really. And yet everyone seems to rate Bosch.
 
We upgrades to a fancy WiFi enabled washing machine last year. All it does essentially is let you start it remotely (if you turn it on first) and notifies you when it's finished. Oh, it also gives you an idea of what the weather will be like upon the anticipated finish time, in case looking out your window suddenly doesn't work anymore.

Advantage is the wife does put some laundry on now, for the novelty, rather than letting it build up to the point I just do it myself. But I've kept the old one in the garage just incase, twelve years and only ever needed the brushes replaced and kids toys removed from the drain. New one is a Hotpoint, old one a Bosch. Pretty sure I could put parts from the Bosch straight into a Messerschmitt BF 109 reconstruction project and watch it fly again.
 
Usually AO.com are great value for all things electrical. Certainly we always use them and signing up for the 12 month gold deal with them pays for itself with a washer/fridge, giving free delivery, installation and taking the old one away.

And no I don't work for them.

Haha, as long as they’re better than Currys at plumbing in a washer. The stupid c nt they sent me didn’t know he had to turn the water off first.
