At the end of each match, the score will be give:
examples are
2 and 1 (having won 2 holes more than the opponent with 1 to play, match would end on the 17th, as the 18th was irrelevant to the result)
10 and 8 (the biggest possible thumping, where one side wins the first 10 holes, and the match ends there)
1 up (one side has won 1 hole more after the 18th)
halved (each side wins the same number of holes)
Shots played are irrelevant - it's about getting the ball in the hole (or conceded final putt) in fewer shots than the opponent.

Matchplay- you win lose or draw each hole, ie 3 up.means your team has won 3 more holes than the oppositionWhat counts as a point though?
If you're 5 holes up with only 4 holes to play for example you win the match, thats called winning 5 and 4 and get a point, you can win 1 up, 2 and 1 etc . Tied games get 1/2 point each.
There are 28 points available(4 lots of pair games, 4x4 points available 16 points and 12 singles final day 12 points available)
14 1/2 points win the match a Tie at 14 points each and current champions retain the trophy.
It's not as complicated as it seems.

McIlroy and Fleetwood 3 up too, destroying the US pair.
Rahm and Hatton have been all over the place and are tied. Great start for Europe.
I had Rahm/Hatton and McIlroy/Fleetwood as the two I thought we could bank on, then was hoping we'd get at least one more point elsewhere. Rahm's started slowly but I reckon Bryson needed the fast start and crowd and might fade if we can get ahead. Get ahead in the first and it forces the US to push harder than they'd want to and they might just lose all 4. Long way to go yet though.
It's such a great format because you can't stop pushing. In a typical round, you might look to consolidate and play more safely. In the Ryder Cup you just have to keep hunting birdies.

the strokes taken is an interesting indication of the quality.
The Irish commentator just said 11 under over 22 holes (between the 4 matches) - that's very difficult to live with.

Good start to the betting too, had Fleetwood & the rag to win the first hole @ 5/2 and a separate single on them to be leading after 6 @ 11/10.

Seeing that scoreboard every hole wont be helping the US either, especially with a couple of batterings (so far) on there.

The body language of the yank team that are actually winning looks awful, slumped shoulders etc.
Had to laugh at Europe fans singing 'is this a library?' :-)Cracking start for Europe and most satisfyingly the crowd have shut the fuck up. Like they were all pissed at the first tee and now all fast asleep as they cant handle their booze.
