In UK football, a raised boot can be a foul for "dangerous play" under Law 12 if it endangers an opponent, resulting in a free kick and potentially a yellow or red card depending on the force and contact. The referee has discretion, but common factors considered are the height of the boot, whether there's contact, the force used, and the level of danger.This is patently false.
Nico ticks most of he boxes there.
It's a stupid decision. Especially in Europe.

Gonzalez was moaning about the ref giving a foul against him for putting a hand on one of their players.You can’t raise your foot that high whether it’s chest or head height. If you do and you make contact it’s a penalty.
We can moan about it but the fact is it’s always going to be given and we’ve tossed away the win.
And then from that free kick he sticks his foot up that high and kicks Dier in the head.
Absolutely brain dead and it was always going to be given.
If he wanted control he'd bench Reijnders who gives us no control whatsoever and plays Silva in midfield, at least in that case we can play Bobb or Sav or even Nunes on the right wing and have some attacking creativity, playing Silva on the wing is just inexplicable at this point.He plays Bernardo as he feels he gives the team more control, and he has to do that because Bobb, sav, and Doku give you no control whatsoever. I’m not saying it’s the right approach, but he won’t play sav and Doku together as both are a liability in posesssion.

Thought we were decent tonight. Had more control and should have scored 5. VAR strikes again, not even sure the ref was convinced but felt he had to give it once sent to the screen. My only complaint would have been our right hand side selection and performance.
It isn’t though is it? Doesn’t matter what it’s supposed to be because the rules are used differently in Europe and it’s not even something anyone can rationally debate. Ball touches a defenders hand in Europe and they give a pen almost every time. It’s bullshit but it’s what happensIt's supposed to be a sport played worldwide called football.
Next you'll be saying there's a north south divide with the rules

Why did VAR refer the ref to the incident so?I’m confused by the fact the VAR was showing the referee that Nico touched the ball, not Dier, yet he still came to the conclusion of a penalty?!
I think some of you think we are Champions League winners, and PL Champions, and you expect us to win every week. The reality is we have to rebuild and there are lots of good signs this season.
It’s not about expecting to win. It’s about performing and the manner of how to win a game.
The ref was shit, yes, but the way we played in the second half wasn’t good enough - slow, obsessed with control, no urgency and no risk. And we’ve seen it so much that the easiest assumption is that it’s by design.

Played great, good intensity and plenty of quality link up play to get into scoring positions. Didn’t get the rub tonight with 2 smacked the bar but we got absolutely fukced over by sh1te decisions. their free kick that lead to the pen was vever and ver a foul and it was also never a pen , you’re a fkin balloon ref!

From the start of the second half until the substitutions, Monaco had their most sustained amount of pressure. We weren't in control at that point - Rodri was isolated & lagging, our passing was poor. The subs improved us and brought stability - his issue was he didn't go far enough & change the system, and/or take Bernardo off. Even then, we had chances to score.

Well the referee took time to decide so he must have been thinking for reasons to justify awarding it. Surely you have to see the attacker was stooping down so that comes into consideration as to how high the leg is. I’ll bet we see a similar situation somewhere in the CL this season and it’s not a penalty and they explain the reason why. That’s what they do, rewrite the rules to fit the result they want on the day.But none of those criteria matter, do they?
That ground sucks anyway, it almost feels like you’re watching a preseason game or a closed door game when Monaco play at home. Makes sense, it’s Monaco, people are wealthy and probably not filled with much passion. Compared to something like Gala at home.Just back to the hotel.

More worryingly than issues on the pitch, was the utterly shocking away end!!!
I was embarrassed. I know it’s an expensive away game and a pint in Monaco is about €100, but it was a convention of tourists and the very best non-singers from the third tier of the Colin Bell and East Stand.
Half the away end was sitting down (I have the photos) and there were only a few pockets of singers - including the big Polish Blue bloke and an amazing young lad in a Goater shirt who tried to get the singing going for the entire game - I told him he was a superstar on the way out.
The guy in front of me had a Real Madrid Screensaver on his iPhone. At least the Chinese tourists I was chatting to tried to join in.
Seriously - worst away end in my 40+ years - tonight I saw a vision of the future of football - scary as fuck!

Balance is the key and having the right number of players for each role, I don't understand why nobody is given a chance from the EDS, Maybe one or two from the EDS would be a better option than Stones or Nunes, because they play each week at fullback

I reffed for five years. The discretion part is key and I disagree about Nico “ticking the boxes”. You've hit the nail on the head "safe". It's boring as fuck, Nobody willing to take risks with the ball. We were happy to pass it around at a very slow tempo and not go and kill them off.Correct and it's infuriating, and then we've got Haaland complaing about his teamates, yet he did sod all (with no service) in the second half. 2 players tried very hard, NOR and Phil, there was a lot of "safe" rubbish elsewhere for me.
Yet we played into their hands, clear as day Monaco just wanted to stay in the game up until the last 10 mins and try get a smash and grab which happened.
Without sounding entitled, Monaco are fucking gash, we should be beating these teams. Just kill the fucking game off and stop fucking about.
