AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

I am not sure where is this "we we were in control" coming from? This team lost ability to control games some time ago and that is the origin of all our problems. Control doesn't mean possession percentage based very often on number of meaningless short passes. How on earth do you have control when team with only 28% possession have 8 corners against you.

Doku has a history of muscular injuries and has rarely played 3 games a week for us. Rodri is coming back from a long term injury. Stones is made of glass. Tell me why taking those three off for Savinho, Nico and Nunes is baffling?
I don't want to derail the thread, but Savinho shouldn't even be a city player
He's nowhere near good enough
And if anyone wants to defend him, all I ask is tell me a couple of games he's played really well in

I guess speed is subjective to a point, I’ve never watched ait nouri and thought there’s a defender with pace and great powers of recovery.

I see player who’s nice on the ball in tight areas, who is regularly caught of position, and often struggles to recover.

Not slow, but not quick. Anyway he didn’t play, so it’s a mute point really.

The defence isn’t great, it really isn’t. CB’s at RB, CM at RB or LB, it’s not good enough.it won’t win you trophies.
No to be fair with the injuries it’s not good enough. First choice, which if everyone’s fit, I’d say is Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol and Ait Nouri is good enough. Problem is getting our best 11 out on the pitch regularly is easier said than done these days. Not sure if it’s the training or the players but the level of injuries has definitely gone up the last 2/3 years

Turd referee.. not a pen at all. Face hits foot, not foot hits face!

Haaland awesome.

Gvardiol with a fucking mare.. and if we play Trafford, he saves Monaco's first goal!!!
How many fouls did he give against us for handing off player. Spanish officials are a joke. Not sure about your last remark.

You can’t raise your foot that high whether it’s chest or head height. If you do and you make contact it’s a penalty.

We can moan about it but the fact is it’s always going to be given and we’ve tossed away the win.
I haven’t said it wasn’t a pen. I guess you are replying to the wrong post.

European refs are tougher on this type of challenge. Raising his boot to waist height was enough to get Bellingham’s goal against us for Dortmund disallowed.

My view is the free kick that led to the pen was very soft but we should have still defended the ball into the box better.

Meanwhile we’ve got a player like Haaland up front, in the form of his life, and we can’t create a single chance for him the second half against a pub team.
I really don’t think that’s fair to Monaco. Personally, I was very impressed with their pressing and shape without the ball. Their press had us rattled that whole second half.

Unfortunately referees are not refereeing but just give decisions to cheating rather than having the courage to recognise it for what it is and punishing it.
It is stupid and weak.
To be fair it’s been that way for god knows how long. Part of me doesn’t blame the players because unless they make a meal of it there’s no guarantee these incompetent refs will give it.

It is ultimately the players we had before Silva, Toure, KDB, Gundogan, Fernandinho who provided us great control so that we could play midfielders are LB/Rb and still get away with it . Now Pep has lost the players so every weaknes is being exposed

The players and Pep will know where we’ve gone wrong tonight and that’s evidenced by Haalands interview
I'm not sure that an interview with a clearly ticked-off player - who did little wrong himself - is evidence of that, at all.

If they'd spoken to Nico and he'd said 'I won't make that mistake again' , I'd maybe agree with you.

So fed up with individual errors undermining the entire team's efforts.

We played pretty well bar the first 15min of the second half.
Problem is we didn’t look to get the third until they scored the pen.
A one goal advantage just isn’t enough given our defensive fallibility at the moment.
Hopefully this will be a valuable lesson going forward for the team not to drop the intensity once we go one up.

My gran could've been lodged at left back for Monaco and Bernado would still pass it backwards.... and my gran has been dead for years...

Decent performance, poor result, on another day we win that 1-3 easy. Similiar to the Brighton game, guilty of wasting chances and over passing.

Not really seeing any attacking patterns in the team + we're not crossing the ball enough for Haaland or shooting from long range.

Balance on the right side was off, I counted about 8 attacks that died on that side, Bernardo being the biggest culprit, surprised he played 90 mins.

I don't get it with the terrible /corrupt ref accusations. I'm sure we've had far worse many times.

A high boot is a free. If it was the attacker it'd definitely be a free out. So as it was our player defending then a penalty seems appropriate.

The ref gave them a lot but we were silly many times too with flailing arms to faces. Again we aren't averse to go down easy either.

I'd put most of this on Pep's tactics. The players didn't play badly but there wasn't enough desire and imo that is up to the manager to make happen.

Our season was always going to depend on whether Pep found a new approach. Some things seem better but some just the same.

I just hope that Pep at least is trying to fix the tactics and not just putting it down to the players eventually improving themselves.
Yeah I think we both just seem to apportion the blame differently, I really don’t think it’s Pep’s fault tonight as much as yourself and a few others. Which is fair enough.

But my reason for replying was just on the word corrupt. Mate, I wasn’t suggesting for a second the ref tonight was corrupt in any way. I was suggesting he was terrible though, on numerous occasions. Really poor.

And defensively he's a liability, at least Doku has improved that side of his game, though I don't especially rate either.
