AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Fair take on the issue, but what troubles me is that it was a literal non-incident when it happened…Nico got the ball, no studs, no kick to the head, and Gvardiol knocked it back to Gigi when the ball hit him on the head. Dier was NEVER “kicked in the head” and was notably rubbing his face and pinching his nose to redden his face while pleading his case to City players and the ref.

VAR LITERALLY re-refereed the incident, but COMPLETELY IGNORED every mugging that took place on every free kick and corner kick!

The hypocrisy and inconsistency of officiating “the Laws of the Game” is what is so irritating!

Watching the amount of flopping and grown men rolling around holding their face feom
Incidental contract is totally fucking embarrassing…no matter which player it is.

Used to be a game for men, but today one wonders what we are rewarding, because it is not acting like a man on the field of play. If these multiple officials in front of the TVs in a remote location want to do something useful, they could point out and replay the absolutely pathetic play acting designed to get fouls and opposition yellow & red card on the big stadium screens before handing them yellows and reds themselves.

Long past time to name & shame these cheats on global TV, and for Leagues to ban them for a game or two!
Oh I completely agree about the VAR aspect. There was no way it was a clear and obvious error. Dier 'bought' it too.

But we've seen this time and again in Europe - if we give them half a chance the refs will stitch us up. So don't give them the chance

I think we all know that our main problem has been, and continues to be, tempo, or lack thereof. We attack and build up FAR to slow. I get Pep likes passing teams to death, but there is a place for both, swap the tempo from time to time. There is no coincide that most of the better goals and performances we put in are when we up the tempo.

Must say, like a few others, that I can’t quite believe we are back at Bernie on the right wing.

Crazy how bad our right side was last night, when I saw Stones at right back I wrongly assumed we had a plan for something a bit different. I just don’t see why Pep made that decision and thought John and Bernie on our right was going to be anything other than a disaster.
Bernie/Pep love in as usual….at least he recognised that Gundog had to move on

Exposed John Stones, unfortunately, which makes one wonder if that extra year will be forthcoming. Might save a transfer fee for a year, but at his wages and the number of games he can play, isn’t worth it?

The Barnsley Beckenbauer looked a pale imitation of the John Stones we have all known and loved, and at one point, after a run forward, simply stopped in place, put his hands on his hips and huffed and puffed trying to recover while standing still as the game went on around him.

Might be time to bring back/up one of the young defensive stars we have in the background, and blood them. Why we haven’t kept Reis as a back up at RB and RCB is beyond me.
We always seem to keep our players a season to long, no room for sentimentality

Football continues to be the only sport that actively rewards cheating, Monaco were dreadful last night with their play acting, feigning head injuries to get fouls and the penalty. when will it ever stop? A free shot at goal from x yards is far too easily obtained these days, far too many pens awarded for nothing offences.

It wasn't a penalty and 1000% wasn't a free kick that led to the penalty

Completely shat on by an incompetent spanish ref who all seemingly have it in for Pep

Giving a penalty based on a freeze frame shot!

Fucking pathetic.

A ball placed into the box and attackers and defenders go for the ball.

I have an issue with this high boot rhetoric.

Nico's standing foot is firmly planted on the ground and he's stretching with his other. Dier stoops and makes contact with his shin!

For me a dangerous high boot is when the player is up in the air, both feet off the ground and he is out of control. Or, when it's a deliberate high kick to the upper part of the body. This was neither.

I expect to see 6 penalties game from now on using the freeze frame logic.

2 points tossed away, hopefully it won't matter.

Need top 8. Some Posters have suggested an additional 2 legged knock out tie at the busiest part of the season won't be an issue!

Absolutely mind blowing.

The luck of the draw is crucial in this comp'

The fewer games greatly increase the chances of winning it.

Bernie's unlikely to beat two players (and Doku gave up on that after the early foul on him). No-one ever moved to give Bernie a chance of making a forward pass, and in the grand scheme of things passing back meant we kept possession.

When we lost possession it was usually because someone (usually Phil) tried and failed with a forward pass.

We just don't give the player on the ball many options, whoever it is. And players turn back even when they have space to go forward. Is no-one on the pitch communicating?
Why do we not make the runs inside and outside our wide players. The runs that Kevin made all the time, ending with a low cross for an Erling tap in. I don't think we have done that all season.

It happens so often when players haven’t been hit anywhere near the head that they go down holding their head. Although I’m not an advocate for VAR, if the VAR officials can look at those incidents and actually see that the offender is effectively cheating, then they should be booked and you’re right, it should be called out. In fact some footballers roll around as if they’ve been hit with a medicine ball these days, look at Foden last night when the ball was kicked at him when he was stopping the quick free kick. He was lying on the floor holding his leg as if he’d been injured. In fact I didn’t know what had happened to him until it was explained.

What frustrates me most is that we dropped points in a match where we played such an incredible first half. We should have been a few goals up. Monaco barely created any danger and at home—it was an absolute once-in-a-lifetime strike and timing against GK like Donnarumma.

That’s also the most reassuring part. We’re capable of playing an almost perfect half like that. The second half wasn’t terrible; it was weaker, but above all just unlucky. Again we have couple of much better chances than Monaco and penalty was shit, even though I can’t completely absolve Nico of blame. You know you’re in a crowd of players, you should assume you do not have 100% control—there’s no point making a move like that.

Funny enough over the years we’ve had quite a few pretty “senseless” penalties: Nunes (on Amad when we lost against Utd), Ederson couple of times, Laporte (against Real, when we won 4–3 first leg but it should’ve been 6–1). Hate it so much.

A draw with Monaco doesn’t hurt the way dropping points against Brentford would, so the key is to win on Sunday. Then we’ll have a moment for a few players to get back to full fitness, like Cherki, maybe Khusanov, Ait Nouri, Marmoush. I hope Rodri tells Spain he needs a rest.

The performance wasn't great. That's natural at this stage of the rebuild. We'll be inconsistent for another month or two.

If we win at Brentford and Liverpool don't win at Chelsea, then we'll be 3 pts off the top while being inconsistent and having injury problems.

The potential of the team is huge and people will take notice in the weeks after the international break.

Haaland is a monster.

I don't know what we are disagreeing about. I was countering the argument that it wasn't an offence. It clearly was. The question is whether it was an offence of dangerous play resulting in an indirect free kick, or an offence of a kick in a manner considered by the referee to be careless resulting in a direct free kick, in this case a penalty.

Of course it is open to interpretation. Pretty much all offences are, one way or another. But I can't imagine a situation where what happened firstly isn't an offence and secondly doesn't result in a direct free kick.

Unless the defender plays in red, of course.

Ah, that wasn't clear at all from the post I replied to, as you were just quoting the dangerous play section verbatim. No worries.
