Football facts that you didn’t know

The highest ever attendance at Old Trafford was 76,962 on March 25, 1939, for an FA Cup semi-final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Grimsby Town.

I lived in Middleton until I was 30 ,and half day closing was Tuesday afternoon.
I think most towns had their own day, though it was probably Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, as they were the middle of the week.

EDIT: I’ve just had a look, and half-day closing became a legal requirement, following an act of parliament in 1950. Local authorities could determine which day was to be early closing.

Not the same as Portsmouth who play on Portsea Island
I know, I was being a bit facetious. It raises the question though about man-made constructions and do they alter the extremes of country borders. Some experts now say Great Britain (the landmass not the political entity) is no longer an island due to the channel tunnel, and we should be described as a peninsula. Obviously this is nonsense.

It should also be pointed out that the Leeds Liverpool canal connects to the Mersey just south of the new Everton stadium. The same canal connects (fully navigable) to the River Douglas which connects to the Ribble therefore technically making all that area including Southport an island. And Portsea creek has had many man-made alterations over the years so that cannot claim to be a natural water division and certainly isn’t permanent.

The Leeds Liverpool joins the Calder and Aire navigation in Leeds. The CA Navigation joins the Humber and, therefore cuts England clean in two.
