The last bank in Middleton is soon to shut (Halifax)
It won’t affect me but will impact on numerous people who live in and around Middleton, many of them elderly.
It’s been announced it’s gonna be another place of worship.

I think some, if not most, 'banks' will be attainable through the Post Office.

As long as they last...

Does make more sense really, having the Post Office acting as a kind of central bank, than half a dozen banks, side by side, in every high street, all offering identical services, like we did until not long ago.

Is this correct?.

You can't pay a cheque into a Nationwide account at the Post Office, or so I was told last week.
Yes that’s true, only certain banks have cheque deposits allowed at the PO but Nationwide seem to be the only major bank prevented from doing so.

With Nationwide you can’t scan a cheque in via the app either like you can with some other banks. They’re a bit behind the times now.

Changes are slow.

I know you can pay money in, I can take money out at mine, but only a small amount.

I'll be surprised if they're not looking at the logistics around it if banks are getting shut down.

Ultimately, maybe cheque paying will be phased out to compensate?

Who knows...?!

Okay, so there's a workaround already. I don't use cheques, so I don't know.

But, in general, this looks like it will become the normal in slightly different ways.

The only workaround is to open another account with a bank that allows personal cheque deposits at the PO and cheque scanning via an app and then transfer the cash once it’s cleared.

It comes in useful with my father who asks me to order things online for him and usually writes me a cheque, saves a trip to the cash point. Just have to watch the cheque limit for scanning in (think it’s £500 with my bank).

Also looks like other major banks are stopping cheque deposits at the PO from the end of this year (according to the Daily Express). Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland.

I moved from the Halifax to Nationwide as Halifax closed the two branches nearest to me, and the one nearest my partner's. I don't have a local Nationwide but will be back in the middle of nowhere tomorrow where the Nationwide has branches in Ludlow and Leominster.

Personally I rarely go into banks, I know for some people they are a big necessity but, cash machines tend to go with the banks closing, certainly the free to use ones.

In Cleveleys up the road from me, now the Halifax has closed there isn't a single cash machine between the sea and tram lines and only two on the other side of them, one of which is quite a walk to get to for someone elderly who lets be honest are the ones more likely to deal in cash rather than tapping cards.

I have banked with the CO-OP for over 40 years. For near 30 years I haven't had a branch within 30 miles of me in fact I am not sure if they have any branches any more- just a head office in Balloon Street? Never really been a big issue for me - credit and debit card payments, telephone and on-line banking plus access to some services via the Post Office have been things I have used for years. Cheques can be a pain but in reality you can get them to send you a small paying in book which you use to post off a cheque to be credited to your account. I've had one for about 5 years I have barely used because in reality almost no-one sends you a payment via cheque these days, bank transfers are the preferred method.

So I personally have been able to continue as normal with the bank closures and TBH the bit that annoys me is not the closure per se its the loss of decently paid jobs sacrificed for costs. The banks do it to save them costs. But where are the customer benefits? If the cost cutting resulted in higher savers interest rates and other benefits then OK I can see where they are going but it just goes in the big pot that pays boards of directors and share holders with zero customer benefits - thats the bit that pisses me off with most of whats going on these days - visible, unashamed corporate greed that is funded by fleecing the customer.

I've just walked past the Halifax branch in Cleveleys and it is only closed temporarily.
It's due to reopen again sometime around 2nd December 2025.

Is it, didn't get too close to it yesterday.
It's covered in scaffolding and looks like it's having some renovations done.
Both cash machines are out of action, but I can only assume until the renovation work is finished.
I've moved into the Anchorsholme area last week, so it's important to me to be able to access cash occasionally.
