27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

You have used 1 website, sqauwka I think. Did I say I had stats, no. I am of the old school view and use my eyes not stats. Stats are helpful but can be misleading, for example David Silva never got the assists and stats his play warranted as he played the pass before the assist or moved in a way that allowed others to do so. So with my eyes the only player I think I have seen on the PL this year that has been better at right back, is Timber and then its a close thing as Arsenal are a lot more negative in their set-up so they don't expose the defence as much. But you have your view, fair enough, just you don't have to continuously state it, especially when a player has had such an excellent game at the weekend
Cheers. We agree to disagree then.

As for quoting one website - it took forever to find a single website with a reasonable 2025/2026 top 10 RB ranking. If you google instead, top 5 right backs in the P/L in 2025/2026, you'll find a bunch of quality posts, none of which list Nunes.

As I've said, Nunes is pretty good on defense - but has a once-per-game or more tendency to make bonehead mistakes that with frequency lead to goals for the opposition. And Nunes isn't great going forward (surely you agree with this).

I like him, that’s the only conclusion I need to draw. I don’t tend to waste time with people obsessed with stats to make an argument.
I’ve read your posts over the years and your appreciate of the game differs from mine so much we would be wasting everybody’s time.
I value my time too much.
I like Nunes too.

Of all our players, I think that Nunes is our best RB most of the time (arguably Khsonav is better) - unless we have complete control of the ball and need not worry on defense - in which case I prefer Lewis for his ball control and better passing ability (although I do not rate Lewis overall).

That said, I think we need more at RB - either better on defense - or better able to contribute on offense. Nunes - for me - is a capable backup - but not good enough starter. You disagree - and fair play.

When was his last completely unnecessary foul deep in our side leading to a dangerous free kick? When was his last extremely poor pass intercepted leading to defensive chaos? How often does he make these mistakes? Do you honestly think that this isn't a problem? That Nunes is A-OK as a starter for a side hoping to challenge for the P/L title?

You're bringing those things up, so you tell us?

And you are at least suspect of this assertion. So go on, you tell me. Absent a definitive list... is it your position that in fact Nunes does not make a bonehead foul or pass deep in our territory leading to a dangerous free kick or scoring opportunity on average once per game, on current form? That in fact, Nunes is an excellent RB, a fine choice for starter in a side hoping to win the P/L? That in a ranking of top RBs in the P/L, Nunes will appear near the top?

Or is Nunes an adequate backup RB? Mostly great on defense - but lacking on offense - which I assert.

I've been a huge critic of him, but he deserves so much credit for getting his head down, not complaining and actually converting to a decent right back.

Someone on here suggested it around this time last year and I thought they were mad - probably said so too. Well they were absolutely right.

You've not answered my question, but I'll answer yours. Probably with caveats though!

- does he make a bonehead foul or pass deep in our territory leading to a dangerous free kick or scoring opportunity on average once per game, on current form?

No. No more than our other defenders.

- is he an excellent RB, a fine choice for starter in a side hoping to win the P/L?

Yes. I wouldn't play him there in certain games, but on occasions where tactically Pep wants our right-winger to move more centrally, Nunes is exactly the right-back I'd want going up the line and cover large amounts of ground.

- in a ranking of top RBs in the P/L, would he appear near the top?

Yes, when used as mentioned above. If our other options were injured and he was forced to play every game, I'm not sure he's be best suited to some approaches and some opponents, but used how he should be I have no issues at all.

I think by the end of this season, people will be looking at this differently. I do think your analysis is the wrong way round though - he's very effective going forward, as shown by the amount of assists he gets. He does still concern me sometimes defensively, but it usually works out and that is what matters. One question - if you think he is lacking offensively, which right-backs do you think are good offensively?

His performance v Everton in numbers below.

I think if we operated with more of a 3atb 2 wing backs with one of the CBs stepping into midfield in possession/ atrack every single player we have slotted into play fullback would benefit: Nunes/ Lewis/ RaN/ NicO. Not sure about Khus as it's early days him playing that role and he hasn't looked keen on venturing to far forward.

Idk.

A healthy Reece James and Jurrien Timber. That's it. No other Right back playing for anyone else will do a better job than Nunes playing for us.

Whether they are a better Right Back for their own team, i don't know or care. But they absolutely would be inferior to Nunes here.

;D

Might be tempting fate, but Nunes looking solid so far, and he's playing more as a right-back/right sided centre-back when Stones goes into midfield. I wouldn't have thought this role suited him, but he's doing a good job.

Seems to be starting to figure out the RB role.

Will be curious to see what happens when Khusa comes back, but is certainly proving to be a worthwhile depth piece for this squad

This has been his level for a while now with the odd mistake peppered in that has unfortunately cost us and lots have jumped on that.

As i repeatedly said in the summer, he has every single attribute we want in a right back.
