Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

If you can’t see Nico and Kova aren’t fit enough for such a high intensity game I can’t really help you mate.

O’Reilly should’ve been in CM from the start, I mentioned that in the pre match thread.

Indeed, injuries are still around and we can never get a good run of games with Pep best 11 with the strong bench
Its still very early in the new season and the only team not dropping many points is Arsenal and we all know how quickly that can change

The last time I saw Alt Nouri play was one of the worst displays from a city player Ive seen in a long time....he had that air of sloppiness and lacking fight about him straight off
Khunsonov is a big miss defensively.
I am still not sure about Ait-nouri. Haven't seen enough of him for City just yet. The worry is that I remember, everyone's favourite, Savinho taking him to the cleaners 2x last year.

It says it all that even with Both Rodri and Nico out he cant even make the bench.....stealing a living literally
He’s a Danny Mills for the 2020s without the once in a lifetime goal v Everton that at the time was the earliest kick off for a premier league game, 11:30.

What made us a great team over the years was our ability to win the ball back out of possession.
We've become a team of lazy bastard's off the ball,no one apart from Bernardo is willing to do the dirty work no more and it infects the whole team.
A piss poor performance that today.
That's on the management. When I saw the line up, the lack of work rate and physicality from the midfield 3 and the 2 wingers jumped straight out, and I thought it's going to be a tough day. I wouldn't mind but we had the opportunity to offload one for a fortune in the Summer but we gave him a new improved contract.

Here we fucking go, another 150 page post match thread after a narrow defeat to a very good team

There should be a kind of entry policy applied to post match threads whereby if you don’t comment in one after a victory then you’re not allowed to comment after a defeat.

It would keep out all the rags / dippers / various player fanboys / tourist / JCLs etc who just flood it with tantrum inspired nonsense, the vast majority of whom are nowhere to be seen when we win
Same as life in general.

Does anybody ever go to a hotel reception desk for example and comment that the room was excellent etc...but as soon as there is problem they are all over social media and banging on the desk.

Same with restaurants. I bet they get more complaints then compliments.

Its how life works!!

Thankfully didn't see that game as been at a wedding today.

An entire fanbase could've told you how that was going to pan out when the team sheet was revealed. Going to Villa with old men and pipsqueeks in midfield didn't work that last 2 years but Josep decided he'd give it one more try.

One of Gonzalez or Rodri has to play as a hold in this system. O'Reilly is the best option at left back and has to start. Our good run was built on Gvardiol and Dias as a centre half pairing and that's where Gvardiol should be.

Further forward Doku and Cherki must be selected ahead of Bobb and Savinho. Bobb is trading off 1 goal at Newcastle 2 years ago, and I can only assume Savinho is off the scale good in training or he has incriminating pics of the manager/board to keep being picked.

Bollocks

Totally toothless up front. Constant slow side to side and backwards passing in the final third. Never looked like scoring. Pathetic!

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

Probably City's worst performance at Villa Park since my previous visit in 23/24 (I'm sure this used to be our lucky ground)

When did a City player last win a 50-50 tackle?

9/38 played so when do we stop using "early days" as mitigation?

It's not exclusive to today but it was on full display today. I cannot be the only one that is getting increasingly fucked off the our inability to make a tackle. Some are worse than others but its too many of them for it to be an individual issue, everybody will chase the ball but hardly anybody will put their foot in and make a challenge.

It's as if they're only playing Rondo's or no contact sessions in training and take that into the match with them. The amount of times i'll see somebody chase down an opponent have an opportunity to make a tackle but instead they just stand there and almost wait for the opponent to play it hoping to force a mistake instead of making a challenge winds me right up.
This^^^^^
Not only this, but pulling their foot out of tackles. I was banging on about it all afternoon. Also, why do we keep getting caught on the wrong side of the ball, instead of just standing the player up? Time and time again, a Villa player would just drop a shoulder, and would be away with us chasing shadows.

Sat in Dublin airport having heard the flight is delayed so thought I'd write out how I currently feel. I caught the first half only and missed the second but this post is more about City in general than today. I find it incredulous that a 4 times champions winning team whom also won the Champions League, FA cup, Super cup and World cup innthe same period now less than two seasons later find themselves looking a shell of their former selves.

We've listened to Khaldoon tell us everything is in place to maintain that challenge. We've watched a new stand and hotel being built which all point to us aiming to maintain and stay at the top. We've seen the worlds no 1 striker sign a 10 year contract whilst breaking numerous records these past few seasons. We're delighted the greatest manager signed an extended contract. All this and plenty more whilst fighting a barrage of negative press surrounding the 115 charges. All the above should be pointing to a bright and great future with a fever pitch expectation of success and continued glorious football. So why does it feel we are currently a long way from that?

Last week v Everton and on many other occaison it's been a dire watch punctuated by the odd bit of genius usually from Haaland. Our style of football is a reflection of more recent signings and I'm now firmly of the opinion that we are carrying at least half a dozen players with a few more yet to prove themselves. We have bought poorly, we continually play players out of position and whether he will admit it or not Pep plays his favourites above others. Some of these players will have good games, they will show promise, they will perform as they should do, afterall they are premier league players. However I genuinely feel they will fail to perform at a standard required every week, to win trophies. They severley lack the strong mentality and the desire not to lose. We are far too nice. The push on Gvardiol today should have had us screaming for a penalty, instead we just played on as if it was nothing had happened in total contrast to Villas players falling over and claiming everyone a foul.

Nunes, Savinho, Doku, Bobb, Rico are simply not good enough to command a first team place. I actually don't think they're good enough for us period. I've seen enough. There are also a few others that have yet to fully impress they have the level required. We need to stop kidding ourselves, stop wanting it to come good, it will here and there but it won't ever like it did before with this current squad.

And what I find most baffling of all is that Pep must have had a say in these players.

Arsenal will be fine as long as there’s little pressure on them.

Us and the dips are going out of our way to give them an easy ride.
