Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Thankfully didn't see that game as been at a wedding today.

An entire fanbase could've told you how that was going to pan out when the team sheet was revealed. Going to Villa with old men and pipsqueeks in midfield didn't work that last 2 years but Josep decided he'd give it one more try.

One of Gonzalez or Rodri has to play as a hold in this system. O'Reilly is the best option at left back and has to start. Our good run was built on Gvardiol and Dias as a centre half pairing and that's where Gvardiol should be.

Further forward Doku and Cherki must be selected ahead of Bobb and Savinho. Bobb is trading off 1 goal at Newcastle 2 years ago, and I can only assume Savinho is off the scale good in training or he has incriminating pics of the manager/board to keep being picked.

Bollocks
Can't disagree with any of that. Even when Doku isn't at his best he's having a go and trying to break through.

Sat in Dublin airport having heard the flight is delayed so thought I'd write out how I currently feel. I caught the first half only and missed the second but this post is more about City in general than today. I find it incredulous that a 4 times champions winning team whom also won the Champions League, FA cup, Super cup and World cup innthe same period now less than two seasons later find themselves looking a shell of their former selves.

We've listened to Khaldoon tell us everything is in place to maintain that challenge. We've watched a new stand and hotel being built which all point to us aiming to maintain and stay at the top. We've seen the worlds no 1 striker sign a 10 year contract whilst breaking numerous records these past few seasons. We're delighted the greatest manager signed an extended contract. All this and plenty more whilst fighting a barrage of negative press surrounding the 115 charges. All the above should be pointing to a bright and great future with a fever pitch expectation of success and continued glorious football. So why does it feel we are currently a long way from that?

Last week v Everton and on many other occaison it's been a dire watch punctuated by the odd bit of genius usually from Haaland. Our style of football is a reflection of more recent signings and I'm now firmly of the opinion that we are carrying at least half a dozen players with a few more yet to prove themselves. We have bought poorly, we continually play players out of position and whether he will admit it or not Pep plays his favourites above others. Some of these players will have good games, they will show promise, they will perform as they should do, afterall they are premier league players. However I genuinely feel they will fail to perform at a standard required every week, to win trophies. They severley lack the strong mentality and the desire not to lose. We are far too nice. The push on Gvardiol today should have had us screaming for a penalty, instead we just played on as if it was nothing had happened in total contrast to Villas players falling over and claiming everyone a foul.

Nunes, Savinho, Doku, Bobb, Rico are simply not good enough to command a first team place. I actually don't think they're good enough for us period. I've seen enough. There are also a few others that have yet to fully impress they have the level required. We need to stop kidding ourselves, stop wanting it to come good, it will here and there but it won't ever like it did before with this current squad.

And what I find most baffling of all is that Pep must have had a say in these players.
Who would you replace them with mate?

You didn’t need to be Sun Tzu to work out it was another Pepfuckup. I actually thought he knows something I don’t, this is going to defy all logical expectations and be a work of genius. It wasn’t.

So much better when Nico G came on so was pretty clear where the fault for that shit performance was.

As long as you know you can do something about it! Sure Pep will sort it out in January and get another c/m and right back - must beat the red scouse now . . .
Of course it had to be a "slight knock" in midweek as well so he didn't start, fucking sick of that shit.

Shone a light on where we are.
We lack the quality to compete consistently. Hopefully Rodri will come back and Gonzales will continue his upward trajectory.
The wings are a problem. Doku is totally inconsistent, Savinho just hasn’t got it at all (he may improve but we can’t wait around for him imo). Bobb, hmm I don’t see anything. With quality wingers we would be fine but we haven’t got them.
I don’t know where Marmoosh and Cherki fit in. Foden is still great but on is own.
Sounds bad but I really think we can still do ok if Pep works his magic.
It’s not great but we are still in transition.

There is no doubt in my mind that our recruitment would have been completely different if it wasn’t for the charges. I hope we can put all that behind us soon.

We shouldn’t be lacking personality though…
Stones, Dias, Bernado, Foden, Haaland all treble winners and even the younger amongst them are seasoned professionals

Lacking physicality a major problem though. As is lacking any creativity, energy and visible motivation

Most frustrating thing of all today was it was a chance to make a statement and fire a warning shot at Arsenal. They must be laughing tonight, will win the league at a canter at this rate

And don’t get me started on us being in the same points as the rags, way too depressing

Point ahead of the Scousers though!

When did they kick the ball at the net? 15 midfielders in the side trying to pass the ball to the other 15 midfielders while the one striker stands there looking increasingly fucked off would be a more accurate description.
Did you see the the size of those stakes he buys :-) couldn't give a fuck if no one passes to him ;-)

The moment the team was announced and we saw the midfield and wing options, it was obvious we were going to lose. How can Pep not see that that and is Pep 2 just a nodding guy now? Thought he would challenge boss Pep like Arteta did and debate the team selections if required?

Honestly given how fucking annoyed I was at the teamsheet I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by the performance. Defence held up very well considering we had no midfield for an hour.

Honestly the improvement in the team that will come about when we can finally get past injuries and baldy's blind stubbornness and get Gonzalez and Rodri together in the engine room is going to be immense.

Get back to Dias and Gvardiol as the 2 centre halves though. It just works, they are a good pairing. Stop breaking it up to shoehorn undeserved appearances for those who put their national team above their club.

Well we are where we are unfortunately. Whomever scouted them id be asking him what he saw that suggested they could play at an elite level every week. I know for a fact we was offered Luis Diaz as the start of last season and he was keen for the move. He was more proven in this league than Bobb, Sav and doku. Im about to get on the flight home so will maybe add a few more names later tonight.
