Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Not judging at all here - as Villa Park is as shite as the Etihad to get home from - but I was a little surpised that at the final whistle, the majority of our fans headed to the door, leaving Pep and the boys to applaud an almost half empty away end. I know it was shite from the 10th min onwards, but I always belive that they you acknowledge the players, come win, draw or lose. As I said, not judging anyone....

Pretty annoyed as we had more than enough to get points today, but just were not creative enough to get that clear cut chance.

Fair play to villa for their defending, but I still feel that two handed push on gvardiol should have been a penalty. Lucky his face didn't connect with the shoulder of the player he was shoved in to, crap refereeing from an official who was happy to give the advantage and then bring play back 5 seconds later for them, but never for us, and to give Martinez double the 8 seconds at every opportunity (and yes, I was counting, unlike the officials).

Table makes for bloody odd reading currently, but we have an opportunity to deal big blows to Bournemouth and Liverpool coming up. That said, if Arsenal brick it again then they should just retire the team from official competitions.

Can't really see Liverpool losing again on top of their recent defeats, they will stop the rot somewhere, even if it's only with a draw ..... and Bournemouth are playing well, they're absolutely no pushovers ..... if Haaland is out for any length of time it's hard to see where our goals will come from to get any points at all out of these two clubs.

Pretty sobering that!
Mahrez was player of the year before we bought him. Sterling was a semi star at Liverpool.
Sane was somewhat the same age as Savinho and obviously did better. However he had a lot more power.

For me Bobb is the most skilful of the 3 we have now but he is slow and lightweight. Doku is all hustle and bustle and will have good days but his football intelligence is lacking. For me Savinho is the most athletic, probably needs to bulk up a bit and will start scoring soon.
Having said that I'd start Marmoush and Cherki instead of all of them

This was always going to be a problem. Football constantly evolves and we need to change to stay in touch. There seems to be a much greater emphasis on individual talent at city now (look how he described Cherki this week) and we have some massively talented players that in our new system have to produce more tHan, perhaps, someone like Sane did in the system we played then
Not seen much of this "evolving" since we were at the very pinnacle in 2023.
Massive drop off directly because of the introduction of out and out, limited wingers. Poor recruitment and decision making - perhaps Pep was thinking of a Robben and Ribbery approach. Unfortunately these two are too inconsistent and well off anything approaching that.

This is what we are looking at with the quality of the wingers now.

Sterling 225 games in Prem for us including as a sub- 91 goals

Mahrez - 145 games - 43 goals

Sane 90 games - 25 goals

Doku/savinho/bobb combined

127 games - 8 goals

Unless that changes then we will have more of these games!

Haaland has one off day and we don’t score!
Sobering stats to say the least, The drop off in numbers is staggering.

City have 18 shots to Villa's 9, and we have more possession too, according to Opta Stats ..... yet we cannot score a goal that counts.

Pitiful ..... couldn't win any 2nd balls, couldn't even get a point from the game.

Hard to get through the players defending in pen area!

And just to add fuel to the fire, 5 of those goals were scored by Doku, who is now in his 3rd season

Only Savinho ever looks like getting in a goalscorer position, but to have 2 goals out of him since he joined is absolutely pathetic given the number of goals we score and opportunities we create
The glaring problem with Savinho is his decision making. Hardly ever gets the final ball / bit right. He’s basically a Brazilian Jesus Navas.

Frustrating as fuck, as his directness and ability to beat a full back are really good.

for sure our wingers need to deliver more. if Haaland doesnt score then Savinho and Doku need to score 1 each. or Bobb.

why Bayern wingers score a lot despite KAne is firing them in too?
Olise, Gnabry, Luiz Diaz already on combined 14 goals this season in Bundesliga + CL games.

dont the men likes of Txixi/Viana, Khaldoon hold some responsibility in this.....the recruitment hasnt been great when you look at it....
too many project type players, players who a level below the level required....Doku, Sav, Grealish Phillips, Nunes are all hugely questionable purchases and there are others that are yet to be proven one way or another..... and that aint just on Pep.
I'll give Viana a pass for the moment, and I'm not sure that Khaldoon really has much say in our targets. If you'd said Soriano then I'd add him to the list. Someone like him should have been kicking arses over some of our buys like Philips, and there really should have been some hard questions asked over Grealish and his drinking before we splurged £100m.

I've recently changed jobs and the CEO of my old company got the elbow because he wasted something like £40-70m on a failed project and failed to achieve other financial targets. It's been far too cosy in our boardroom and executive suite for too long. We need someone who's prepared to hold peoples' arses to the fire and we don't have that.

Perhaps those fans who had spent hard earned money to get there felt somewhat short-changed. The performance hardly merited any form of endorsement

Yeah. Crucially of those 18 shots, only 3 were in the half that was most important. Villa sat back second half and probably got the feeling we weren’t going to score so were happy for us to have the ball more. Even then how many saves did Martinez make? I can’t remember any of note

Probably better they go than maybe shout at Pep and his players for such a turgid performance. Everton fans fucked off well before the final whistle last week.
