Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Yep.

This was our side today other than Donna and Haaland. 3 goals between them in 9 games.

As someone else alluded too. We have probably been over performing due to Haaland.

Bernado - 0 goals this season (4 in last 42)

Foden - 1 this season.

Dias - 0 this season (and none in his last 3 seasons)
Stones - 0 this season
Gvardiol - 0 this season
Bobb - 0 this season (only 1 in 25 games in his career)
Savinho 0 this season. (1 in 35 )
Nunes - 1 this season. (Only 2 in 33 in total)
Reijnders - 1 this season.

If we can all see this, surely the decision makers at the club must be preparing to sort this out in the January transfer window?

I'm really fucked off about the two-handed push by Rogers on Gvardiol and var thinking nothing of it. And neither did the commentators, but they were biased throughout.

But I'm also annoyed about the shove in the back by Rogers on Nunes in injury time, shoving him off the pitch when it was going out for their goal kick.

It's just really dangerous and was unneeded anyway. There's been serious injuries, and worse, recently due to players hitting advertising boards/walls around the pitch, so that kind of thing needs stopping.
Defo a penalty. Brushed away.

Doku did well when he came on today and, apart from one match, has been good this season. Certainly a very strong option off the bench.
He’s frustrating as hell but he’s got to be a starter. At least he has shown that he can find the back of the net and provide for Erl occasionally even if not consistently. Sav, Bobb, Bernie currently offering nothing from wide areas.

We’ve had a major problem on the right wing in particular now for a couple of years and I can’t understand why it wasn’t addressed in the summer.

It seems that we’ve tried Bernado, Bobb, Cherki and Savinho there this season, with Marmoush being given a go in the last few minutes today. I’ve probably forgotten somebody as well. And that’s all within a couple of months.

I think that sums up the current state of the squad. As I see things, we only have three definite starters when fit; Donnarumma, Rodri and Haaland. O’Reilly should probably be a fourth but for some reason he’s been on the overlooked at times.

Every other position is up in the air because the newer players either lack the quality to make positions their own, or the more established players have deteriorated to the extent that are no longer automatic starters.

The net result is that we have load of churn in the starting XI most weeks and Guardiola then has to use his subs to correct the mistakes he’s made in the team selection. Today’s team could have been picked out of a hat and unfortunately I don’t see the pattern changing anytime soon.
Both wide men are a worry and the drop off from what we’ve had previously shows a horrendous lack of planning. I don’t know the solution but it is worrying. Yeah Nico should have been left back, gvardiol and Dias in the middle, like it has been for most of this period of better form. Trying to bring stones into the mix bit us on the arse.

Bobb, Savio, Doku, Nunes nico, blah blah…keep rearranging the deck chairs, we ain’t wining a title with those lot as your options, and O Reilly is firmly in that company.

I understand you want to look for solutions, but your clutching at straws, I get it, it’s painful.

We’re all on the adjustment curve.
Well you may think that but this Arse team everyone is backing for the title is not that good.

Sunderland are second ffs, chances are they will be battling to avoid the drop second half of the season.

That is the level of this PL, how the fuck we've lost 3 already to shite is beyond me.

Pissing about and rotating to ensure minutes are played by all, even though they aren't good enough is doing for us.

One defeat and wet fannies are out in force.
Get a grip for Christ’s sake.
It’s not our God given right to win every game.
Today Pep got the team selection wrong. He didn’t do it on purpose. We still have players out injured and he’s trying to keep the players in the squad happy by giving them all gametime. As a result first half was a shit show.
There’s no way he would have started without a holding midfielder if he had a fully fit one available and once Nico came on we did look more stable.
Many teams have struggled away at Villa and we have done so in the past and gone on to win the league.
It’s still October. No need to panic yet.

Trouble is, Marmoush and Cherki are not proven in the PL and Rodri may not get back to what he was!

I hate how we are tossing points away this early.

We have to ride the lows because it's a rebuild and only 9 games into the season, Pep will sort it out and when we get everybody fit we have a good 11 and a bench, Marmoush did ok last season but picked up an injury and is not ready, Cherki is going to be a great player and open up teams for fun.

One game at a time with ups and downs along the way

I’ve accepted that we’ll never see these kind of wingers again.

There are players that we could’ve got who know where the goals are. They might not be the fanciest names but they know how to get g/a. Gakpo, Bowen, Lookman.

But unfortunately the club continues down this path of project players.
Agree with you here. Those really are wide forwards, and they just don't really seem to be what we recruit, for whatever reason.

We have out-and-out wingers (Doku, Savinho), or creative midfielders (Bobb, Cherki).

We're possibly looking to have Marmoush playing there on the left, but he doesn't seem totally comfortable with it.

We need more goals from the wide players, but it seems like their job is just to stay wide and try and stretch the defence to make space for our midfielders to run into. Well, you can tell how well it's working by the amount of goals our midfielders are scoring...

It's 3 defeats! All against average sides that have been made to look terrible in other games!

Giving players game time to keep them happy is the problem!

Savinho is starting near enough every game since signing that contract!

He had done nothing to deserve a new enhanced contract and hasn't done nowt to warrant it since!

Things started to look better recently.

It’s not the defeat, it’s the constant levels produced by a number of players.

How much time is too much time? Another 2 seasons before we sell the mistakes?

If you don’t get recruitment spot on the level slides and poor performances become normal.

The wins were largely down to Haaland. The defending and pressing is hit and miss as Bernardo has alluded to again after the match. It’s not good enough.

I am concerned about the road we are travelling down. So many issues don’t seem to be resolved.

Wins is great but performances have been okish.

The simple answer today was the missing midfield that was injured or not fully match fit, Stones was asked to do 2 jobs today and it didn't work. Players are only human and we just looked off.

I said it before, give Pep his best 11 for 20 games and then we can judge the rebuild

Everton at home, we could and should have been behind, thankfully Beto is shit.

Brentford away, not top sure we got out of our own half in the second half.

Playing OK for 45 minutes isn't anywhere near good enough, as shown today once you do that against even a half decent side you'll get turned over.

That's the point I was trying to make about papering over the cracks. We can't even keep possession of the ball anymore and that's not from pressure from the opposition, that's just from us being shit in possession in general.

Take Donnarumma and Haaland out of this side and we'd be in the bottom half of the table.
That there is the absolute crux of where we are at.

All our wins are just masking our poor performances. We are a total shadow of the treble team.

I'm more concerned at the state of our performaces - win, lose or draw.

Different players playing different roles every week. A player goes on a run of good games then suddenly finds himself warming the bench, whilst watching the player who has come in for him have a stinker.

Different back 4 every game and zero threat from set pieces.

Zero goal threat from anyone but Haaland.

Games crying out for substitutions then those changes are made with less than 10 minutes left.

We will see a lot more of these awful performances this season IMO.

We will just have to roll with them i suppose.

This season all the top teams will lose plenty of games, Arsenal will drop points after their luck runs out with corners and free kicks, Let's not forget we should have beaten Arsenal

That’s unrealistic and not going to happen.

How long is a piece of string?

Maybe the players are not the right players? These off days and injuries seem to be regular now. No such thing when the team was winning.

Cant have it both ways. What level is ok with you? That’s the question for each poster? This current level is not good enough. The club has started to lower the level required to win constantly. Over time we need to find it again. Starts and end with recruitment. Not good enough.

Not great from Oscar that, is it?
