52 | Oscar Bobb - 2025/26

He’s not a winger though…..whether he’s good enough to start over the likes of Foden and Cherki in his proper position is another debate.

It’s not a debate at all though is it?

If Pep thought he was capable of playing as a 10 for City then he wouldn’t have gone out and bought Cherki to play there instead, he wouldn’t be playing 4/5 players ahead of Bobb at that position.

Personally, I think the way we set up, and the way opposition teams set up against us, means whatever wingers we have will give us the same results.

The approach needs to change somehow. We need to be creating 3v3 chances, not stuck with 7v10 situations all game.

I have always said that when we play teams like this who defend with every player back we could do with buying the player with the hardest shot who could take pot shots at a packed defence wherever possible or the trickiest ball juggler who could get a penalty by running down the defences throat time and time again.

But Peps footballing philosophy wont allow anything so common.

Our wingers are still getting the ball out wide in 1v1 situations, and getting the ball with room to run, we’ve seen Doku run riot in games when his confidence is up.

The problem is that Savinho and Bobb aren’t good enough and Doku is inconsistent and can’t play every game.

I disagree a little, just because Doku is such a freak with his acceleration that he can cause trouble, but mostly our wingers don't get the space now. Certainly not yesterday anyway - I am perhaps generalising based on just the last match, and there are games where the wingers have had a bit more space.

Biggest frustration for me Bobb is when he does beat a player, he then takes too long when he could release the ball or have a shot. Savinho drives me up the wall a bit, and needs to be stronger undoubtedly.

Breaking a leg makes me feel bad for him but hundreds of promising footballers have had their careers changed by a bad injury and you cannot excuse the fact he’s got zero goal threat and very few assists in a position that lives and dies by those contributions and we are desperately in need of a world class winger to support Haaland.

Would you be happy taking the wingers we have, at their current level into next season?
Depends on where they are performance wise at the end of the season.

Appreciate he’s had a serious injury but his reputation is living off that 23/24 Newcastle away goal. Not physical enough for me

That's the problem in a nutshell.

Bobb was getting bullied on the wing yesterday, but he still had a couple of little moments when his quick feet allowed him to accelerate away from his opponent.

He needs to either play where his quick feet can cause more problems, or sit on the bench and play little cameos when we're already winning.
However, we've just invested in Cherki to play that precise role.

No, based on their performances now.

If you’re basing it on where you’re hoping Bobb ends up in the season then you’re just saying the same thing as me - he’s got 6 months to deliver or he’ll get replaced.

Sterling was much much better than Bobb he had plenty of pace for one
He probably was, but it’s difficult to compare. Sterling was playing regularly every week at 17. He also didn’t have a major leg break, from what I remember

Bobb clearly has talent. Let’s be patient and not write him off yet. The examples above, we did the exact same with players like palmer

This is his 3rd season in the team, he missed one through injury.

If he’s not a reliable goalscorer by the end of this season, we will spend £60m+ on at least one winger and he will be 4th choice at best. That means very limited game time and he’s unlisted to progress much not playing so that’s the end of his City career pretty much.

If we’d sold Savinho and bought someone with the money, it’d already be over.

I like him, I want him to become the player we thought he would be, but time is running out.

I don’t think anyone actually thinks we’d go into next season with the wingers we have now playing the way they are, but people get upset when you point out that means they’ve got a few months to come good or get replaced.
3rd season in the team, but the first one he barely played and made the odd sub appearance or cup match start.

What winger do we have that’s a reliable goal scorer? None of our current wingers consistently score goals or get assists.

You mentioned palmer previously. We didn’t really give him a chance either and lots of fans wrote him off after one season/ the odd appearance. I just think it’s too early to making a judgement already.

We’ve got senior players who cost a fortune, who have been even more inconsistent in my view

They also did it with Raz!

Did we win the Treble after "Raz" left? Was frustrating as hell - but now looks like Ronaldinho compared to the current wing incumbents.
Fernandinho and Rodri certainly didn't take anywhere near as long, as some current players, to settle (if they ever do)- and indeed did succeed in becoming exceptional players - but again - the signs were far more evident early on.

Except I didn't say anything like that, you tried claiming that if neutrals had watched them in the academy they'd have picked Palmer & Rogers over Bobb which is entirely nonsense in at least one of those two. Don't tell me what I'm thinking, thank you.

I really don't understand why some of you have lowered the standards for what is an acceptable level of consistent performance for manchester city to such a degree

He’s clearly a very bright prospect but some of our fanbase got carried away after some impressive pre-season performances and his goal against Newcastle. I can see him having a big future here but he shouldn’t be starting just yet.
