Hurricane Melissa "continues to strengthen" as it approaches Jamaica and now has sustained wind speeds of 185mph at its centre, according to the National Hurricane Centre.

That makes it the second-strongest storm in terms of wind speed in Atlantic history.

That is absolutely insane. This will be catastrophic. Prayers to Jamaica.

When I think back to how bad Storm Eowyn was at about 140 KmH in Ireland, one of the most developed countries in the world, imagine what it’s like having 160 KmH stronger winds. Absolutely insane.

I got married just up the road from there.
Honestly, this is going to be bad. The real poverty that still exists, means many don't have proper shelter.
The many tin shacks will simply be blown away. The hotels need to let everybody in.
They are used to storms, but this is different.

Brutal stuff. Now I live in SE yankeeland, hurricane prep is a part of life every summer, but theres no prepping for one like this. It might just split the island in two ffs :(

Got the webcam on at “Half Way Tree” Kingston, it looks not too bad and several people strolling around.

It's about 70 miles from Kingston, and the hurricane force winds extend about 30 miles from the centre, so it'll be very windy there, but a long lasting "british" gale/severe gale.

However it went onto the coast close to Black River, a small coastal, low lying town in the southwest, this will be devastated by it, it's on an estuary, and the biggest killer is storm surge. I've been through Black River, and it is pretty much all at sea level just off the beach.

Incidentally both planes investigating the storm just before landfall suffered significant G in the eyewall, one flew round in the eyewall for about 45 minutes, but both suffered anough G to be forced to abort their missions and had to return to their bases.

These planes are old and quite big by the way.

A brit got interviewed yesterday saying he arrived on Thursday and there was no warning. Melissa was just starting as a tropical storm at that stage and no incline that it was going to turn into the strongest hurricane this year. I feel for the family having young kids with them as well. Nothing you can do , literally stranded

I travelled overseas Thursday and for some reason seem to recall it threatening then, but I wouldnt bet on it.

I’m supposed to be going to Jamaica in Feb. Not holding out much hope of that happening.

The travellers might not have been told, but the tour companies knew. I've just checked the reports from NHC, and at the start of last Thursday it was a 50 KT tropical storm, but was forecast to be 115 KT hurricane by 28/0000, but it would have cost them money to cancel or move them somewhere else.
