Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Unless you're at least 10-15 points in front at the top of the table then EVERY Premier league game is a test that you should be putting everything into .... they all yield three important league points if you win them, and the rags have just proved that you can absolutely zoom up the table if you win a few games!

You can only afford to 'comfortably' drop the odd league point if you've already created a sizeable gap where any loss isn't really gonna affect you all that much ....

But, because we flopped at Villa, we're now in the tough position of having to overcome two very good teams just to keep ourselves within touching distance of Arsenal!
We were building a little bit of momentum with some effective rather than superb performances. I knew the Villa game would be a bit tough though. I was more disappointed in that Villa really didn't play that well, certainly not like that tit Hinchcliffe was making them out to be, and we couldn't up our game. 2 more tough PL games are on the horizon, we need to be on it for both of them.

Our wingers non end product when in good positions is contrary to this opinion
The opportunity for those "good positions" to arise is very rare thanks to our walking football.

Other more direct and attack minded teams will have far more of those "good positions" so can afford to waste a number of them.

Shocking from Hinchcliffe again!

One incident in the 2nd half when a City player (can't remember who), was taking the ball forward, and had his legs taken from behind.

Somehow, he convinced himself that our player had actually commited a foul!

In my opinion Villa didn't play particularly well, but listening to his praise for them you'd think it was a performance comparable with the Brazil 1970 team. What an oaf that guy is.

Walking football ?
We are continually playing against teams with a block !

Well we better make a statement the next two games.

And have done for several seasons winning the title in at least three of them. More if you remember earlier performances against 8-man defences.
But we no longer have the top-class players required to break down such defences, and still attempt tactics that need Sterling, Sane, KDB and Silva when we have Savinho, Nunes and Doku.

Think we all know why, it’s sickening. The can Ickle Villa hold on mantra from the 46th minute was treating them like Halifax away in the FA cup

There should really be advance warning before mention of the word Halifax.
Sends a shiver down my spine every time......
Not a good memory..

Yes people cite York away as the lowest point in our history but losing there has to be a very close second.
I've always held 0-2 at Bury in the League Cup as worse than Halifax.
We'd finished 4th in the 1st Division a few months earlier and just didn't turn up on the night. We were already beginning our slide when we lost at Halifax, the pitch was a mud bath (as were the terraces) and it was only 1-0.

We've had quite a few in our time. Shrewsbury away in the cup was another, more recently was Wigan away when Delph was sent off.

We weren't playing endless sideways passing walking football when winning titles and trebles, yes it was possession based football but it was incisive and attacking with quick, one touch forward passes.

I don't remember us finishing 4th in any division around the time ...

Edut: just checked ..you mean 1972. ..?

Other ones I can remember was it Brentford in the late 80s? Cardiff City early 90s and Oldham beating us when Pearce I think was in charge
Brentford beat us midweek league cup away 1st leg before we played utd at home Sept 89..

Pretty sure we lost in the fa cup at Brentford too,I was there but can't remember the score !

Just now finished watching the game, hence the belated comments.

Villa are a very tough side. And unfortunately, due to injuries, we didn't have an obvious player to start at DM (presumably Nico Gonzalez was deemed not ready to start). Hence our midfield was vulnerable - and too, we for some reason didn't start Doku, which meant that or offence wasn't nearly as good as it could have been.

I thought that much of the game was 50-50 in terms of which side was best until roughly the 60 minute mark when we brought on Nico Gonzalez, Doku and Nico O'Reilly - at which point we were by far better. I wish that Gonzalez, Doku and O'Reilly would have started (perhaps bringing Gonzalez off at half-time if medical staff thought that this was best).

I cant help but think O'Reilly can do a job in our midfield, certaily would bring a bit more presence to it anyway. I dunno, obviously Pep doesnt fancy him in there

were may have been unbeaten for a number of games and our performances had improved but were we ever really playing very well.?...we beat some average teams and the moment we come up against someone decent our true level was shown imho

This team will fight for top 4 as it stands. Can we win the league...yes but there is a lot of work to do and big improvements to be made. We need Rodri back...we just dont have a midfield without him at present...Nico G has played well and tbh if Rodri is back and plays Nico G plays as well....Reijnders isnt cutting it at present at all.

We need a right back...still! - Nunes has done well but we need to have Khusonov there at least but in January if the club were to be considering buying anyone it must be a right back (Im sure we wil get linked to the next Brazilian wonderkid who will get everyone excited and then subsequently disappear into obscurity!)

we need more from all of our attacking players baring Haaland....ever single on of them needs to step up way more than they have been doing...Sav, Doku, Marmoush, Cherki Bobb..... start to put their bodies on the line. Im getting a bit bored about hearing of potential.......Baring Marmoush NONE of them have proved anything in reality....The club/manager/coches need to be way more brutal with some of these players....

Summer wasnt good enough - we are too nice....its time to turn to the likes of Stones, Ake, Bernardo and thank them for their services..give them the send offs they deserve and then go out and buy some real quality...go and actually compete in the transfer market. There is no hiding that we havent been as clinical in the transfer market as we should have been ...too many projects and plan B's and C's. The club also shot itself in the foot when it overpaid for Grealish...it moved the bar for what we are willing to pay for a very average player that was never worth it and never was going to be.
