Will we win the league this season?

This thread makes me laugh. The amount of flip-flopping based on individual results is off the scale. Before Sunday's defeat, many felt we were in the mix for the title as a result of our improved form since the 2 August defeats. Go back to the aftermath of that Brighton defeat and some were saying we wouldn't even finish in the top half. At various points since the start of the season we've gone from Liverpool winning it at a canter, Liverpool imploding and no way will they win it now, Arsenal not having the mentality to win it, Arsenal winning it at a canter, City winning it, City being lucky to finish in the top 4/top 6/top half, City being back in the mix (pre-Villa), and now City having no chance (post-Villa)
While the tone of the thread may change from win to to defeat to win, I’m not sure it’s the same posters who flip flop. It’ll be different people who post they believe we’ll win it after we win a game, and different people again who post that we won’t after we’ve lost.

Some of us have maintained our opinion throughout. Even after wins, I’ve said I’m not sure we’ll be consistent enough to win it. Even after defeats, some have maintained that we still will.

The reactions are absurd. Development is a long-term process, and it requires a broader perspective. Then again, football is entertainment, and entertainment is emotion, so after a defeat people feel sad and negative.

I rewatched the Villa game, and Pep is right — we were better than the scoreline suggests. Villa have been much improved recently, they have quality players. They didn’t create much danger — maybe they didn’t need to — but there really weren’t that many counter-attacks, which is a good sign. Playing away at Villa is always a tough fixture. We had several genuinely excellent chances: Haaland’s 1-on-1, Haaland’s header in the second half, the marginal offside on Haaland’s goal, Foden’s shot blocked by Onana’s face, Savinho’s double shot — the second of which was cleared in an absurdly lucky way by their defender. Any of those could have been goals and change the dynamics instantly.

Right now Arsenal look out of reach, but it’s still too early to rule out our dreams — and honestly, why would we? Regardless of the Premier League, there are still cups to win. For example, I would consider finishing 2nd in the league and winning the FA Cup an enormous success. Even more so the UCL — in a two-legged knockout format, with Haaland and Don, I think it’s more achievable than people assume.

We’re undergoing a squad rebuild. Over the last 10 months half the team has been changed, including parting ways with Premier League legends like KDB, Ederson and (to a lesser extent) Grealish. Experienced players like Gündoğan and Akanji have gone. We have lots of new players who are adapting, or still very young and only now breaking through to the top level (Savinho, Bobb). We don’t have Rodri, and against Villa we didn’t have Nico until the 60th minute.

And even so, we’re still one of the best teams — 1 loss in our last 10 matches. We were two minutes away from taking 3 points away at Arsenal, who are in the form of their lives. Let’s be honest: apart from Arsenal, no one in the league looks out of reach, including Liverpool.

Cherki and Stones are back, Nico, Marmoush, Aït-Nouri, Khusanov are coming back, and Rodri will return at some stage.

From here, things can only get better — it’s almost a certainty.

This thread is bloody surreal and it sounds like some are on suicide watch.

Arsenal are four points clear with 29 matches (87 points!) to play and idiots are saying that the title is all over.

Get a grip. Arsenal have had some handy leads in the past and and have failed to make it stick over the past 20-odd years.

I am not saying that City will win the League or that Arsenal will not, but this sort of defeatist rubbish should be knocked on the head.

The snowflakes throwing the towel in now must have been on suicide watch when City were eight points behind United in 2012 with six matches to play. Equally when City trailed United by a similar sort of margin in the 1968 season until Malcolm Allison made the statement that United 'were rubbish' and City overhauled them.

We entered a tricky 4 game patch - Villa, B'mouth, Liverpool and Newcastle - on the back of decent if unspectacular performances. I still think 7 points from those 12 is ok. The pressure is on a bit with arsenal's form but there's loads of time to go.

The team needs the fans at this point, transition season or not

Arsenal win the league every November. Fortunately for us, they give out the medals in May.
Except that Arsenal have - by far - the best depth. And in spite of key injuries to multiple positions - keep grinding on.

Arsenal are rock solid on defense. By far, the best in the P/L. On top of this, they play a ball control system which simply grinds the opposition down. And in spite of their current poor ability to score from open play - I think that this will improve - they find a way to win - set plays mostly.

IMO - Arsenal will coast to victory - winning the P/L in record fashion - earliest side to win the title with games to play.

And yet despite us being a bag of wank according to many, they're only 6 points clear of us having scraped a last minute draw when we played.

It will be double digits by December. prob closer to 20 by February.

These are absolutely nuts opinions. They're fucking crap. Any team of ours from the last ten years with the exception of this and last year walks through them

Huh?

If they're "so fucking crap" and "any team of ours... walks through them" - why are they so dominant in the league, winning and winning and winning again?

And moreover, having watched most of their games, they're a fucking machine! Obviously better than anyone they've faced - with the possible exception of the Liverpool game which they lost - which was very unlucky.

Pep saying we arent physical enough in midfield and wide positions (midfield) to win duels....

This is the point lots on here have been making......we have these creative players but lack physicality.....Doku, Beranrdo, Marmoush, Sav, Reijnders......all need to be much better in this aspect.....its not just a matter of physical strength (though that certainly helps) but its a matter of attitude......

Doku and Bernardo have the fight, but do Sav, Bobb, Reijnders Marmoush? There is little evidence of this so far with any of them

Form changes. I want to see City's potential when Rodri starts to recover. For the moment, we need to put ourselves in the title race and keep them in sight.

Sad thing is, I think our spine is world class. (Even with Rodri out - I think Nico is doing a good job) but our wingers and fullbacks are so, so bad that we're hamstrung by them. And we'll be nowhere near it because of our wide players.
